Batman’s Hottest Comic in Years Could Go Anime — The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Studio Is the Dream Pick
The Absolute Batman artist is calling for a small-screen makeover from Studio Trigger, pitching a turbocharged TV take that fuses Gotham grit with the studio’s kinetic flair.
File this one under: comic book creators shooting their shot. Absolute Batman artist Nick Dragotta says he wants the series on TV, and he has a very specific studio in mind.
Dragotta wants an anime — and he already picked the studio
During an AMA on the League of Comic Geeks forum, Dragotta was asked if he has talked with DC Studios co-head James Gunn about adapting Absolute Batman. Short answer: he hasn’t heard anything yet, but he’s optimistic about DC’s track record.
"I’m not in the know, but I know DC makes and licenses quality stuff so I’m excited to see what comes... Personally, I’d love to see a Studio Trigger anime of Ab Bat."
Yes, he actually calls it "Ab Bat," which is the kind of ultra-specific creator shorthand I weirdly love.
Why Studio Trigger?
Dragotta’s dream pick is Studio Trigger, the Japanese animation house that’s been on a roll lately. You’ve seen their work even if you don’t realize it: the fantasy hit Delicious in Dungeon, two entries in the anthology Star Wars: Visions, and Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which was a legit phenomenon. Trigger doing a hard-charging Batman remix? Makes sense.
So what is Absolute Batman, exactly?
If you missed the launch: writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta reimagine Bruce Wayne from the ground up. It’s the same symbol, totally different life. And there are some sharp left turns that will make long-time Bat-fans blink.
- Bruce is a blue-collar civil engineer in his early 20s, not a billionaire.
- He still suits up as Batman at night.
- Alfred Pennyworth isn’t a kindly butler here — he’s an MI6 operative tailing Bruce.
- Issue #1 arrived in October 2024 as the first book in DC’s new Absolute Universe imprint.
- It didn’t just make noise; it was the bestselling comic of 2024 and hit number five on the New York Times bestseller list.
Meanwhile, over in the DCU...
DCU Chapter One’s next big TV swing is Lanterns, landing on HBO in early 2026. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre star as Green Lantern Corps heavy-hitters Hal Jordan and John Stewart, teaming up to investigate a murder on Earth. Sounds grounded, at least by space-cop standards.
And there’s plenty more in the pipeline from DC Studios beyond that, including Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow, and more projects still to come.
