Barbie Has Just Been Nominated for Oscars – Not in the Way We Expected

With that in mind, it's no wonder people are so excited about the 96th Academy Awards, as the competition looks to be fierce.

Still, there is one film that seems to have the most fan support. Greta Gerwig's Barbie, this year's highest grossing film with a whopping $1.44 billion at the box office, has been the ultimate fan favorite since its premiere in July. Naturally, audiences are eager to see the movie win Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards. So far, the film has received several nominations - but more importantly, the comedy hasn't been nominated in some seemingly obvious categories.

Barbie's Initial Oscars Nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just released a list of early nominations in several categories for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards. While Barbie hasn't been nominated in categories such as Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, and Animated Short, Greta Gerwig's film has received five nominations in the Sound and Music category.

Thus, Barbie has been nominated for Oscars for:

• Best Original Score – in this nomination, the comedy will compete with:

  • American Fiction

  • The Boy and the Heron

  • The Color Purple

  • Elemental

  • The Holdovers

  • Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

  • Killers of the Flower Moon

  • Oppenheimer

  • Poor Things

  • Saltburn

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

  • Best Original Song (Dance the Night, I'm Just Ken, What Was I Made For?) – in this nomination, the comedy will compete with:

    • Keep It Movin' from The Color Purple

    • (Superpower) I from The Color Purple

    • Can't Catch Me Now from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

    • Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People) from Killers of the Flower Moon

    • Am I Dreaming from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

    • Best Sound – in this nomination, the comedy will compete with:

      • Ferrari

      • The Killer

      • Killers of the Flower Moon

      • Maestro

      • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

      • Napoleon

      • Oppenheimer

      Barbie's Loss

      Remarkably, there is a category that Barbie hasn't been nominated in even though it might appear that Gerwig's comedy has every reason to have been.

      • Best Makeup and Hairstyling – the following films have received nominations in this category:

        • Maestro

        • Napoleon

        Hopefully, Barbie will score a nom in the Best Picture category. But that is yet to be seen.
