Two decades after X2, Alan Cumming is returning as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday — and he just put the script question to bed.

If you have been wondering whether Avengers: Doomsday actually had a script when cameras started rolling, Nightcrawler himself just weighed in. Alan Cumming is back as Kurt Wagner, and he says yes, pages existed... eventually.

So, was there a script?

'We eventually saw a script.'

That is Cumming to Entertainment Tonight. The 'eventually' part kind of says it all. Marvel has taken heat before for shooting while things are still in flux, and this sounds like one of those ever-evolving situations. Cumming called these things complicated, especially with a movie like Doomsday that is cramming in a small army of superheroes. He also mentioned the studio-level secrecy you would expect: characters running around with alternate aliases so no one spills the goods. He says he got the gist of what was going on, but it was not the sort of script that immediately made perfect sense on a first pass.

How massive are we talking?

Massive-massive. Cumming agreed the project keeps shifting as it goes and joked that somewhere in Surrey, a production coordinator is probably losing their mind trying to book what he estimates as roughly 28 of the busiest actors on the planet. That sounds like an exaggeration until you remember what these Avengers crossovers look like these days.

Where Cumming fits in

For anyone keeping score: Cumming first played Nightcrawler in 2003's X2 and later voiced the character in the 2006 video game X-Men: The Official Game. He says he has wrapped his work on Doomsday, with the usual Marvel asterisk that reshoots could happen. Also important: he clarified he only shot Avengers: Doomsday, not Avengers: Secret Wars.

Storm watch

Cumming teased that Halle Berry's Ororo Munroe, aka Storm, is back in the mix. As of now, Berry is not on the official, confirmed Doomsday cast list. But Marvel has repeatedly said the cast can still expand, so do not be shocked if that door opens closer to release.

  • Cumming confirms there was a script, but it arrived 'eventually.'
  • He describes Doomsday as gigantic and constantly shifting, with secrecy so tight some heroes are listed under aliases.
  • He jokes about the chaos of scheduling about 28 megastars and pities the coordinator handling it in Surrey.
  • He has finished filming his Nightcrawler scenes, with possible reshoots down the line.
  • He only shot for Avengers: Doomsday, not Avengers: Secret Wars.
  • He teases Halle Berry's Storm; she is not officially confirmed, but Marvel says the cast could still grow.
  • Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026.

For the paper trail folks: these comments came from Cumming's chat with Entertainment Tonight. The story first popped via SuperHeroHype (Tamal Kundu) and then made the rounds at ComingSoon.
