After a post-Infinity War hiatus, Anthony and Joe Russo are back at Marvel and say Avengers: Doomsday will push the MCU’s storytelling into a next-level maze of interwoven plots—setting the stage for Secret Wars to follow.

Marvel pulled the Russos back into the game, and they are not easing in. Avengers: Doomsday is the next big swing, and the directors are out here promising a heavier, trickier story than we usually get from these things. Given who the villain is, that tracks.

The Russos are chasing the hard stuff

After stepping away post-Endgame, Anthony and Joe Russo are back to direct not just Avengers: Doomsday but also Avengers: Secret Wars. Their track record is pretty clear: big action, big feelings. This time, they say they are pushing the narrative complexity even further.

"As much as we run at the fun of what these films can be, we also run at the complexity and the difficulty of what these movies can do at a narrative level. I think we have found a new level of that in Doomsday."

The tonal shift, they add, comes straight from the villain.

"Victor von Doom demands a certain tone."

What this one is about

Doomsday throws a very large, very expensive net: the Avengers link up with the Wakandans, the New Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four to take on Victor von Doom. Yes, that Victor von Doom. It is designed as a crossover crush, with old faces returning and a few major first-time team-ups that Marvel has been holding in its pocket for years.
