Ave Maria: You Can Hear Caitríona Balfe's Real Singing in Outlander S7E3
The actress was pushed out of her comfort zone.
The last two chapters of Outlander had fans worried over the dropping quality of the show, but thankfully, it looks like the current Season 7 has done a brilliant job of correcting past mistakes and making Jamie and Claire's journey worth following again.
The long-awaited season, which has aired three episodes so far, looks and feels great, and some of the darker tones introduced to the story help a lot.
In the recently released Episode 3, the couple lost their house and belongings to a fire, and Jaimie finally discovered where the stolen Jacobite gold had been stored — Mr. and Mrs. Bug had been living above it all along. Heartbreakingly, Jamie took young Ian with him to search for the gold, and the boy accidentally killed Mrs. Bug instead of her husband.
During the funeral, Mr. Bug forced Claire to sing Ave Maria in honor of his dead wife, and fans were amazed to hear the character sing the song with much beauty and talent. Some people even suspected that a professional singer had dubbed Caitríona Balfe for the scene, but in fact, the actress sang the solemn song all by herself.
'Oh, well, I can't say that it's a natural thing for me to be singing. You know, they suggested it [and] it's always nice to have a new challenge. They might have been able to pick an easier song, but they didn't. They really threw me in there.' Caitríona Balfe said. 'But you know, it's a beautiful scene. I think it's always hard to say goodbye to certain characters. And it felt like a fitting send-off for a beloved one that we have.'
The Ave Maria sung by Claire might not sound as flawless as it could, but Outlander fans are fine with that, recognizing that Balfe is not a classically trained singer and her voice might be a little imperfect. Ultimately, this tender and slightly scary Season 7 scene is sure to become one of the greatest scenes in Outlander history.
Outlander Season 7 Episode 4 will arrive on Starz on July 7, 2023.
