James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally lifted the curtain on its budget, stoking hype for the December 19, 2025 debut after the sequel shot alongside Avatar: The Way of Water and wrapped back in December 2020.

James Cameron does not do small. The third Avatar movie, now officially called Avatar: Fire and Ash, just had its price tag put out there, and shocker: it is massive. The film is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.

The money

Per Variety, 20th Century Studios has reportedly spent north of $400 million on Fire and Ash. That puts it in the same wallet-melting neighborhood as 2022's The Way of Water, which was widely estimated between $350 million and $460 million and still stands as Cameron's most expensive movie to date. So, yes, this is another one of those no-expense-spared Pandora vacations.

How we got here

Fire and Ash was shot alongside The Way of Water, a bit of an industry-nerd maneuver that helps with continuity and scheduling. For context, The Way of Water wrapped production back in December 2020. The new one is also going long - more than three hours - because of course it is. It is James Cameron, after all.

What this one is about

Story-wise, the movie picks up after the Na'vi's brutal war with the RDA and the Sully family's loss of their eldest son. Jake and Neytiri are staring down a fresh threat on Pandora: the Ash People, a Na'vi clan with a harder, more ruthless edge, led by a warlord named Varang. The Sullys are fighting to stay alive and protect Pandora, and the conflict is designed to push them to their breaking point, emotionally and physically.

Who is involved

  • Director and producers: James Cameron returns to direct and produce; he also co-wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
  • Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Edie Falco, and more.
  • Key crew: Cinematography by Russell Carpenter; production design by Dylan Cole; set decoration by Vanessa Cole; costumes by Deborah L. Scott; score by Simon Franglen.

The bottom line

Fire and Ash is a giant, very expensive swing that keeps the Avatar machine rolling with the same scale, runtime, and world-building ambition as the last one. If you are into Cameron pouring money and tech onto the screen, December 19, 2025 is circled on your calendar.
