Antony Starr Leads Netflix's Next Big Series: Cast Unveiled And Premiere Window Revealed
Netflix is ramping up its Australian drama slate: the Antony Starr-led Breakers has added new cast members and secured a release window as production rolls on, signaling a big year ahead for the streamer.
Antony Starr is trading spandex for salt spray. Netflix has locked in a 2026 global launch for its Australian psychological thriller 'Breakers' and stacked the cast while cameras keep rolling. It also happens to be the first Netflix series to shoot in Western Australia, which is a cool milestone and a great excuse to put Busselton and Margaret River on your screen.
What is 'Breakers'?
Set in a fictional coastal town, the series follows two American backpackers who wander into a tight-knit surf commune that looks like paradise until it doesn’t. The official tease lays it out cleanly:
"Two American friends backpacking through Australia stumble upon what seems like paradise in a remote surf commune… As a member mysteriously vanishes and the group’s rituals grow increasingly unsettling, the friends realize they’ve been drawn into a dangerous cult."
Who is in it (and who is making it)?
Starr leads the show and pulls double duty as an executive producer. He plays the leader of the surf community, described as:
"a charismatic but mysterious figure."
He’s joined by Oliver Edis, Annabel Wolfe, and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. Fresh additions include Asher Yasbincek, Sherry-Lee Watson, and Brodie Townsend, with David Howell, Tyroe Muhafidin, Tom Dawson, Lu Miller, and Eliza Learmonth also on the call sheet.

Behind the scenes, Pete Jackson is writing the series. Mary Nighy and Ng Choon Ping are directing. It’s produced by Clerkenwell Films (the team behind 'Baby Reindeer' and 'The End of the F**ing World') alongside BBC Studios Australia Productions. Executive producers include Gavin O'Grady, Petra Fried, Wim De Greef, Pete Jackson, and Antony Starr.
Where they are filming (and why that matters)
Production is underway across Western Australia, with shoots in Margaret River, along the Busselton beachfront, and in Perth. The state government backed the project via Screenwest’s Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive, which explains how this became Netflix’s first series filmed in WA.
Release plan and timing
'Breakers' was announced as part of Netflix’s 2026 Australia and New Zealand slate and will debut worldwide in 2026. The production expects to wrap in June 2026, which points to a late-2026 drop. Tight? Absolutely. But the setting, the premise, and Starr in cult-leader mode make this one to keep circled.
