Anime Takes the Crown: Chainsaw Man – The Movie Tops Letterboxd’s Best of Last Year
Chainsaw Man slices through the competition, outpacing Sinners and Marty Supreme in a dramatic showdown.
Well, this is a bit of a curveball: Letterboxd finally got around to dropping its own version of Spotify Wrapped for 2025, and if you assumed it’d be all prestige flicks and Oscar bait at the top, think again — an anime feature came out swinging and took the crown for Highest Rated movie of the year.
Chainsaw Man: Out of Nowhere, On Top
According to a staggering 700 million user votes, the top dog (pun intended) of the entire Letterboxd Year in Review is Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc. Yeah, seriously. Amid all the buzz around star-stuffed dramas, it’s Denji and his demonic chainsaw arms leading the pack with a 4.4 average rating.
The movie covers what’s known as the ‘Bomb Girl’ arc from the original manga: our favorite reckless devil hunter, Denji, crosses paths with Reze — a mysterious new girl who turns out to be (shocker) way more dangerous than she seems. There’s a reason ‘explosive’ is more than just a metaphor here.
What Chainsaw Man Beat (And Yes, People Are Talking)
Some real heavy hitters had their eyes on that top spot this year. Letterboxd users, though, went wild for Chainsaw Man, knocking out Oscar frontrunners like One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sinners. If you want the full top 10, Letterboxd posted it on their site (and, naturally, on social media, because they know how to drive everybody nuts).
The Cast Reacts (and One Gets Emotional)
Word traveled fast. The English and Japanese voice actors for Denji — plus a big chunk of the English dub cast — all sent out a thank you video to the fans. Alexis Tipton, who voices Reze, called the whole thing a 'dream come true', and honestly, you can see her point. Not every day an anime movie tops a list like this.

Don’t Worry: More Chainsaw Man Is Coming
For anyone asking, ‘What’s next?’ — good news: Chainsaw Man season 2 is confirmed and will bring the International Assassins arc to the screen. Basically, Denji gets chased by a ridiculous roster of international killers. Should be chaos, in the best sense.
Other Anime to Keep on Your Radar
- Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 is rolling out weekly right now.
- Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 and Oshi no Ko season 3 are both dropping their premieres this week.
So: If you’re already missing the Chainsaw carnage, there’s plenty else to watch while you wait for more.
And if you want a refresher — or just want to be the person who understands what actually happened in the movie — now’s a good time to check out guides to the Chainsaw Man movie’s ending and where to pick up in the manga after the Reze Arc. After all, everyone’s got an opinion... but few bother to keep up.
