Andrew Garfield has issued the final word on The Amazing Spider-Man 3: it’s not happening. The definitive update slams the door on years of fan speculation around Sony’s most debated Spider-Man era.

If you were still holding out hope for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, Andrew Garfield just shut the door himself. It is not a maybe, not a wink, not a coy tease. It is a no.

Garfield finally says it out loud

In a new GQ video, Garfield was asked point-blank if The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was secretly in the works. His answer could not be clearer:

"It's not happening and I don't believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen."

That might sting a bit if you were part of the #MakeTASM3 movement that sprang back to life after his 2021 surprise in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield's take on Peter was always more emotionally open and a little raw, which is exactly why he has such a loyal fanbase. No Way Home gave that version of the character a real moment of closure, and people understandably wanted more.

The plan that fell apart

  • After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit in 2014, it pulled in $716.9 million worldwide but drew mixed reviews.
  • Even so, Sony had big plans: The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was dated for 2016 as director Marc Webb's final Spidey film, with The Amazing Spider-Man 4 penciled for 2018 and spin-offs like Sinister Six in the pipeline.
  • Then came the 2014 Sony hack and, not long after, a studio deal with Marvel Studios. Garfield's run was shelved, and Tom Holland made his MCU debut in 2016.

Why everyone kept thinking it might still happen

This is where fandom memory—and a little Hollywood scar tissue—comes in. Garfield publicly denied he was in No Way Home for months, only to show up anyway. So when he says TASM3 is not happening, some fans understandably squint at that history and keep the dream alive.

Also, the current era of multiverse storytelling makes anything feel possible. With Marvel's Secret Wars on the horizon and universes colliding left and right, there is a non-zero chance we see Garfield swing through again in some capacity. For anyone new to the meme: fans often call him Peter #3, which is both a joke and a handy label when you have three live-action Spider-Men to keep straight.

Where this really leaves things

Garfield gave as definitive a no as you're going to get about a true Amazing Spider-Man 3 sequel. The duology remains what it is—divisive on release, but increasingly appreciated for his performance—and No Way Home served as a soft epilogue for that Peter. Could he cameo in a future multiverse event? Sure. But a full-blown TASM3? According to Garfield, that chapter is closed.
