And Just Like That Season 2 First Reviews Are Out, And They're Not Good
The spinoff takes a solid legacy and flushes it down the toilet…
When it debuted in 1998, Sex and the City became an instant hit with audiences all over the world. Its female-centred narrative was a novelty to many viewers, who found it empowering and uplifting.
Furthermore, the show's overall hilarity made it impossible not to fall in love with it.
Over the six years that SATC was on the air, it attracted a large fandom that craved to see more of their beloved characters in any shape or form. Naturally, fans were thrilled when two movies were released in 2008 and 2010. Excitement grew when HBO announced a prequel titled And Just Like That…. However, with the second season now airing, audiences seem none too pleased with it.
The first two episodes of AJLT's second season have just premiered, and fans can't stop complaining about the show's subpar quality. They claim that AJLT has lost the warm and risqué charm of Sex and the City. The characters feel out of place — Samantha's absence is more noticeable than ever. The new storylines fail to resonate with the dedicated SATC fanbase. And to add insult to injury, the spinoff fails even further by failing to properly develop the new characters even as it neglects the classic trio.
'Instead of sticking with Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte until then, the writers have made the duff decision to expand the list of core characters,' wrote Anita Singh of Daily Telegraph.
Plot cohesion seems unheard of in season 2 of And Just Like That…. The entire show comes across as an anthology of SNL-like skits with mediocre punchlines that the plot awkwardly revolves around. Consider, for instance, Che's ludicrous one-liner about 'currylingus.' The original show's writing was head and shoulders above AJLT.
Many fans are questioning whether Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis realise that the new stories suck. And Just Like That… fails to honour the original story that inspired many women worldwide. The spinoff tries to capitalise on the original's popularity and fails miserably every step of the way.
'It’s really so demeaning to women in general but especially those in their age bracket. They appear to be lost, out of touch, and insecure. The gross references and conversations about sexual matters are stupid attempts for what?' a Redditor ponders.
Season 2 of AJLT has just begun, so there is still time and room for improvement. The next episode airs on 29 June.
