Fans are still not sure what happened to Amy's mother.

One of the most popular sitcoms of the 21st century, The Big Bang Theory lasted for 12 full seasons, with each new episode making viewers feel even more attached to the Pasadena gang and their friends. And while Chuck Lorre proved to be a great showrunner once again, capable of turning a seemingly dubious idea into a real hit, he still left quite a number of plot holes in the series, and fans still can't get over some of them.

Perhaps one of the biggest continuity issues that concerns people to this day is the identity of Amy's mother, Mrs. Fowler.

Back in Season 4, when Amy was just being introduced to the show, one episode featured her and Sheldon talking to her mother on the laptop, which was a rather awkward scene considering that Amy had been quite distant from her mom.

In the episode, Mrs. Fowler was portrayed by veteran actress Annie O'Donnell, and viewers were quite pleased with how she handled the role.

Naturally, as Amy became one of the main characters in the show, people expected to see her mother on screen again at some point. However, it wasn't until Sheldon and Amy's wedding in Season 11 that the character finally appeared — but she wasn't played by O'Donnell!

To everyone's surprise, iconic actress Kathy Bates was introduced as Mrs. Fowler in Season 11. Even though Bates is a more accomplished actress than O'Donnell and her performance as Amy's mother was also great, many fans were angry at the producers for ruining the continuity of the story, arguing that O'Donnell should have played the character until the end of the series.

However, it looks like Lorre did the right thing by recasting the role, as Bates was simply perfect as the estranged mother, stealing the spotlight from the main quintet of actors the moment she appeared in front of the cameras. And even though the continuity of the show was a little off, fans still got their share of laughs thanks to Bates' iconic performance.

'When you can get Kathy Bates, you get Kathy Bates!' one fan noted, and that really says it all.
