Tales of defiance, passion, and affairs.

Mexico is a country of deserts, cacti, sombreros, and burritos, as well as some of the world's most dangerous drug cartels. Despite its proximity to Hollywood, Mexico is not a frequent setting in modern cinema. However, this trend has begun to change in recent years.

We have chosen five full-length films dedicated to Mexico's culture, and history.

1. Amores Perros, 2000

A traffic accident brings the lives of three Mexico City residents together. Octavio, in love with his brother's wife, turns to illegal dogfighting for money. His beloved dog is in danger.

The famous model Valeria begins an affair with the influential publisher Daniel, who leaves his wife and children for her.

El Chivo, a former guerrilla and professional killer who spent 20 years in prison, strives to improve his relationship with his adult daughter, who thought he was dead all her life.

2. Roma, 2018

It is the beginning of the 1970s in the elite district of La Roma. A middle-class family is going through a difficult period. Antonio, a businessman, is constantly looking for an excuse to leave home under the pretext of a business trip in order to spend time with his mistress.

His wife, Sofia, takes care of all the household chores, including raising the children. She, in turn, uses the services of a housekeeper named Cleo.

3. New Order, 2020

For newlyweds Marianne and Alan, one of the clearest days of their lives turns into a real nightmare. Their luxurious mansion, located in a fashionable area of Mexico City, was captured by rioters. While their wedding was going on, a civil war broke out in the city.

The armed forces took advantage of the unrest to commit acts of lawlessness. They seize the homes of wealthy Mexicans, torture them, and then brutally kill them.

4. Frida, 2002

After a terrible car accident left her bedridden, the young Frida Kahlo developed an interest in painting.

A couple of years later, she decided to show her work to the famous artist Diego Rivera, who quickly fell in love with her. Soon, Rivera proposed to her, but their relationship did not turn out well.

Rivera turned out to be an inveterate cheater with many affairs on the side. Fortunately, the personal drama does not discourage Frida from conquering the world of art with her talent.

5. For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada, 2012

Following the adoption of the 1917 Constitution, which outlined the path to establishing a secular state, Mexico experienced a period of repression against the clergy.

Catholics, whose rights had been restricted, began an armed rebellion against the federal government led by the radical atheist Plutarco Calles. The resistance forces hired the experienced agnostic general Enrique Gorostieta.

Among the rebels was Jose, a 13-year-old boy who would be canonized 80 years later.
