Fans are excited about the upcoming episode of American Idol, but one detail has left them puzzled.

The show continues to surprise us with outstanding performances, insightful comments by the judges, and unexpected voting results that send some of the best contestants home.

The previous episode proved to be one of the most impressive, not only due to the excellent song choices made by the contestants but also because of the outcome, which led to the elimination of Nutsa and Lucy Love.

Now, with the next episode airing today, fans are left wondering: should we expect a Top 7 or a Top 8?

In the previous episode, a national vote resulted in Wé Ani, Iam Tongi, Oliver Steele, Tyson Venegas, Marybeth Byrd, Warren Peay, Haven Madison, Colin Stough, Megan Danielle, and Zachariah Smith (in random order) making it into the Top 10. Season 8 alum Adam Lambert mentored them.

Now that we know who the ten remaining contestants are, the upcoming episode will focus not only on the artists but also on the judges themselves! The Judge's Song Contest episode continues the tradition that started last season. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie have spent time getting to know the contestants, their personalities, musical preferences, and vocal abilities. Now, it's up to them to find the perfect songs for the singers!

Each judge must select a song for the contestants, who must then choose one of the three songs provided. The song chosen by a particular judge is worth one point. The judge with the highest score can save one of the lower-scoring singers.

However, since the premise of the next episode reads, 'The judge's song contest returns as the judges each suggest songs for the contestants to choose from; America votes for the top seven,' and Ryan Seacrest announced that we would know the Top 8, there has been no small amount of confusion.

In the previous season, this themed episode featured the Top 11, from which one contestant was eliminated and another was saved. However, three more contestants were eliminated in the following episode to reach the Top 7. It is possible that this season, three contestants will be eliminated, but one will get a chance to be saved by the winning judge, which means we will have a Top 7 plus 1.

We'll find out later this evening whether that's true or not. Episode 16 of American Idol airs on 1 May at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
