Anime fans, brace for impact—the new film offers a bold big-screen reimagining of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's hit sci-fi saga.

The time loop is back. A fresh trailer for the anime take on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's 'All You Need Is Kill' just landed, and it looks like a stylish barrage of mech suits, aliens, and do-overs. The interesting wrinkle: this version puts the spotlight squarely on Rita.

The twist: Rita takes the lead

The teaser makes it clear the movie centers on Rita (voiced by Ai Mikami), flipping the usual point of view. If you know the source, that is a notable pivot and a good way to make a very familiar loop feel new again.

What the story is

Sakurazaka's sci-fi starts with Keiji Kiriya, a soldier who realizes he is stuck reliving the same brutal battle against an invading alien force. Every time he dies, the day resets. He learns, he adapts, he survives a little longer. On his 158th reset, he gets a message from a legendary fighter known as Rita, who may actually know what is happening to him.

'Full Metal Bitch' — Rita's battlefield nickname, and a reputation she definitely earns.

Who is making it

Studio 4°C (Princess Arete, Thundercats) is handling the animation, with Kenichiro Akimoto directing. Keiji is voiced by Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer; Okarun in Dan Da Dan), while Ai Mikami leads as Rita.

How we got here

  • 2004: The original novel, illustrated by Yoshitoshi Abe, is published in Japan (December).
  • 2009: Viz Media releases the English translation (July).
  • 2014: A manga adaptation arrives from writer Ryosuke Takeuchi (Moriarty the Patriot) and artist Takeshi Obata (Death Note).
  • 2014: A live-action Hollywood movie hits theaters, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, directed by Doug Liman. It earns $370 million worldwide and sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Release plan

'All You Need Is Kill' opens in Japan on January 9, 2026. Warner Bros. has not locked in a Western release yet, but the film did screen at New York Comic-Con in October, which suggests the international rollout might not lag too far behind. As soon as dates land, I will update.

For now, the new trailer sells big-scale alien mayhem and a character-first take on Rita. If they stick the landing on that perspective shift, this could be more than just another loop through the battlefield.
