On closer inspection, their split doesn't seem so unexpected after all.

The massive fandom of the dating show Love Island, which is currently airing its 10th season on ITV2, was sent into a frenzy today by the news of the breakup of last season's runners-up Lana Jenkins and Ron Hall. The split comes less than four months after the Season 9 finale, in which the fan-favorite couple seemed as solid as ever.

'Unfortunately, [Lana and Ron] have decided to separate, which is a decision they have made amicably, and of course, they still remain good friends,' a source told The Daily Mail.

Although this breakup came out of the blue, there were actually clues that foreshadowed it for the most observant fans.

The couple had a fight on the flight home

Even before the show ended, Lana and Ron reportedly had a huge fight on the flight home from the island. The couple spent their first night off the island apart, and even the filming of the reunion with the families was in question.

'Lana and Ron had a furious argument on the plane home — production crew had to step in and calm it down,' a source told The Sun in March. 'They were due to stay overnight in London together but after the fight they went back to their family homes separately to cool down.'

The long-distance relationship didn't work

Lana and Ron live in different cities that are over 200 miles apart. Of course, that kind of distance has been a real problem for the couple ever since they left the Love Island villa.

'When I'm not with her, it's actually quite hard. It's well hard,' Ron told The Sun in April.

The Daily Mail source confirmed that the issue of distance had become the key factor in the couple's decision to split.

'Commuting from Manchester to Essex and back again whenever they wanted to spend time together, as well as managing their work commitments just proved too difficult,' the source explained.

Lana deleted comments about Ron from her social media

Back in June, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Lana deleted some comments about Ron from her Instagram account. People got really worried about the future of the couple when Lana posted a story about taking some time alone.

'I've had a couple of days being wholesome and taking some time to myself but got a busy couple of weeks coming up so it's back to it,' she wrote, leaving Love Island fans reeling.

With all these clues in mind, the breakup between Lana and Ron is not as shocking as it may seem at first, and feels more like an inevitability that was only a matter of time.
