All Creatures Great & Small Season 4: Tristan's Replacement Already Found?
Will James Anthony-Rose's new character replace Tristan while he is off to war?
All Creatures Great and Small is probably one of the best feel-good shows of recent years. Based on the semi-autobiographical books by Alf Wright, the series follows the story of the author and his work as a veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales.
But despite all the coziness, darker times have come to the fictional village of Darrowby.
At the end of Season 3, the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that war with the Third Reich had begun. Tristan Farnon, one of the story's central and most beloved characters, realized that it was his duty to join the army. The last episode ends with Tristan's heartbreaking goodbye speech to his friends and family, which moved many fans to tears.
Of course, viewers were devastated to see the charismatic and mischievous assistant vet go off to war, and everyone is now worried that Tristan might be injured or even die at the front. Meanwhile, someone has to fulfill Tristan's duties at his brother's veterinary clinic, and many fans thought that a replacement might have been found already.
Filming for Season 4 of All Creatures Great and Small is now in full swing, and there has been a new addition to the core cast. Actor James Anthony-Rose was spotted alongside Samuel West, who plays Tristan's elder brother Siegfried, as they were riding in a vintage green car during the filming.
Fans were quick to assume that the new actor was cast to portray Calum Buchanan, a friend of Tristan's from veterinary school who would take his place at the clinic. However, it turns out that James Anthony-Rose is playing a different character in the show's fourth season — Richard Edmundson.
According to the original books, Richard is a young and wealthy landowner who becomes the protagonist's main rival for Helen's heart. This character is likely to be the main source of conflict in the absence of Tristan.
James Anthony-Rose is best known for stage roles in theatrical productions as well as episodic roles on television. You can also see the actor in the upcoming Apple TV+ military drama Masters of the Air.
While no official announcement has been made about the release date for Season 4, the new installment of All Creatures Great and Small is expected to air in the UK in fall 2023, and US viewers will most likely see it on PBS in early 2024.
