The stalemate is cracking — and the end is finally in sight.

Autumn shows up, and so does a fresh batch of All Creatures Great and Small. It has already been lively: Mrs Hall went missing from the action for a bit (all sorted now), and Siegfried is having enough blow-ups to keep the surgery on edge. The vibe in Darrowby? Never boring.

Will the show keep going?

Nicholas Ralph is game. He says there are more stories to tell and he would love to stick with it. Callum Woodhouse is on the same page, with one caveat: the show shouldn’t run until it gets stale. He thinks there’s an end out there somewhere, but not anytime soon — this isn’t a forever show, but it’s not packing up either.

"You never want to outstay your welcome. You never want to keep going until it starts to feel a bit stale or overworked."

Spin-off chatter (the fun kind)

Woodhouse has a very specific spin-off pitch: build a series around Jenny. Pair her with someone unexpected — like Mrs Pumphrey — and lean into a buddy-comedy energy. Jenny and Mrs Pumphrey roaming the Dales solving problems? Honestly, I would watch that.

About that movie rumor

The cast has been whispering about a film. Nothing official, just a lot of hoping out loud. Their logic makes sense: Brian Percival, who directs the series, was a key creative force behind Downton Abbey, and that show made the jump to multiple movies. So the cast is basically asking, politely: can we have one too?

Where the story is headed this season

The war is over — Victory in Europe has been declared — and the show shifts into the messier business of peacetime. Translation: personal lives get complicated in a different way.

  • James wants peace at home and at work, but he’s juggling vet calls, a busy family, and a very intense Siegfried.
  • Helen is spending time with young Jimmy and Rosie, while big changes loom at Heston.
  • Tristan returns after several years at war and has to re-learn Darrowby life from scratch.
  • Mrs Hall is doing the emotional heavy lifting to pull everyone back together and settle the surgery down.

It’s a season about reconnecting, figuring out purpose again, and letting the world exhale after years of strain.

Where to watch

All Creatures Great and Small seasons 1–5 are available on Channel 5. If you want the source material, James Herriot’s books are out there too.
