'There was not a huge amount of acting taking place… because it's really horrendous to have that many people yelling at you and wanting something.'

Summary

  • The Crown is one of Netflix's most popular shows.
  • The upcoming sixth season will have some horrific scenes that will make any next installment impossible.
  • The cast say it was a difficult experience to film the scenes.

Seven years after its debut, The Crown remains one of Netflix's flagship series. Following a somewhat fictionalized version of the British royal family, the show revolves around Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, who sadly passed away last year.

Documenting the late queen's life before and after her ascension to the throne, the drama also explores the hardships of being a royal that her family members face. In particular, The Crown has delved into the issues Prince Charles and Princess Anne have had in their personal lives due to their responsibilities. Now that the sixth and final season of the show is about to be released, it's going to explore the drama surrounding the tragic death of Princess Diana. And it seems that this story will render another installment of the series unfathomable.

Season 6 and the Portrayal of Diana's Death

Split into two parts, the upcoming sixth installment of The Crown will focus on the royal family prior to Princess Diana's untimely death. This will include exploring the relationship between Prince Charles and his and Diana's young sons, Queen Elizabeth II's stance on the divorce, and Lady Di's romance with Dodi Fayed. However, the show's producers have vowed to approach all of these topics with extreme caution, as they continue to cause anguish and pain to many living people, including, of course, members of the British royal family.

Perhaps that's why there won't be a death scene, as it will take place off-screen. But Season 6 of The Crown will show the hell Diana and her partner went through just before the tragedy. These scenes will be none too pleasant to watch, the show's star promises.

The Lady Di Actress on Filming the Scenes

According to Elizabeth Debicki, who portrays Princess Diana on The Crown, the scenes leading up to her character's off-screen death were 'unbearable' to film. It felt like the paparazzi and press were constantly on the prowl for Lady Di and Fayed, and there was no place where they could feel safe.

'At times it's almost like an anomalistic response to being pursued, by that many actors playing the press, because there's nowhere you can go and you only have to be in a situation like that for about a minute, before you realize this is completely unbearable. And no one should ever be having to experience what it feels like to try and get the scenes in the daytime in Paris, trying to get from one place to another, and to have this swarm around you. You feel very trapped. It's a really unpleasant experience,' the actress said during a Netflix press conference.

The experience also made it clear to Debicki that The Crown could not continue after those horrific scenes. Viewers simply couldn't return to a show that was still causing them a ton of second-hand angst.

The Crown returns with Season 6 in just one week, on November 16th.
