Talk about timing: the announcement dropped just as Mizuho Kusanagi’s manga turned its final page.

Well, that took a minute. After a decade of radio silence, Yona of the Dawn is actually coming back. The show’s official account on Twitter says new episodes are in production, and yes, that’s because Mizuho Kusanagi’s manga is now complete. If you made peace with never seeing season 2, you can go ahead and un-make it.

The quick version

  • The Yona of the Dawn anime is officially returning, with new episodes currently in production.
  • Announcement came via the show’s official Twitter account.
  • Season 1 ran for 24 episodes from October 2014 to March 2015.
  • The manga started in 2009 in Hana to Yume magazine and has now wrapped at 46 collected volumes.
  • The anime has only covered the first eight volumes so far, so there’s a lot of untouched story sitting there.

What this story is (and why fans care)

Set in the kingdom of Kouka, Yona of the Dawn follows Princess Yona, who goes from pampered royal to fugitive when a childhood friend stages a coup and murders her father. With her bodyguard Hak at her side, she hits the road to track down the legendary four dragons and figure out how to save a kingdom that just imploded under her feet. It’s classic fantasy coming-of-age with political messiness and found-family vibes, which is exactly why people have been waiting ten-plus years to see the rest animated.

The vibe online

Fans are losing it in the replies, and honestly, fair. A sampler:

"Please say this is real."

"I'll cry if this isn't true."

"OMG I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY ALL MY LIFE. I'M SO HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO WITNESS THIS."

Not everyone’s buying it, though. One skeptic chimed in with:

"I'm so tired of these advertisements. This is OBVIOUSLY to boost final sales. It will never get full adaptations and it's also not for demand of the fans... it's just a glorified advertisement. Specially true for shoujo."

That take isn’t new if you’ve followed anime economics, but with the manga now finished, it’s a slightly different equation than the usual promo push. Either way, the continuation is happening; the real question is how far the adaptation will go.

So… when do we see it?

Timing details weren’t included in the announcement, just that new episodes are underway. Fingers crossed we’re not waiting another era. With 2025 shaping up to be a monster year for anime and fantasy riding high, this could be a well-timed comeback. There’s certainly enough material for Yona to make a serious run if the production sticks the landing.

Until we get a date and more specifics, I’m choosing hope over cynicism. It’s been a long wait. Let the dragons fly.
