Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman reunite to lead Netflix's remake of the French film Time Out, with Scott Cooper writing and directing fresh off his Springsteen biopic.

Adam Sandler is not taking his foot off Netflix's neck. A decade into his streamer run, he is lining up another one: a new remake of the 2001 French drama Time Out, and he is bringing Dustin Hoffman with him.

What Time Out is and who is playing who

Time Out (originally directed by Laurent Cantet) follows a man who gets laid off and decides not to tell his family. Instead, he drives off to his pretend job every morning, then sinks into a maze of lies and small-time cons to keep up appearances. Sandler will play the lead, Vincent. Hoffman is onboard as Vincent's father.

Who is making it

Scott Cooper is writing and directing. He is coming off Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, and this new project has a bit of a twisty development history: when Cooper first started putting it together, Christian Bale was eyeing the Vincent role. Jon Kilik is producing.

The Sandler-Netflix machine keeps rolling

Since signing his Netflix deal in 2014, Sandler has been doing exactly what he wants, often with his usual crew, and bouncing between broad comedies and left-field dramas. On the comedy side, you know the drill. On the drama side, he has kept pushing himself.

  • Comedy runs: The Ridiculous 6, Murder Mystery 1 and 2, Hubie Halloween, and yes, Happy Gilmore 2.
  • Dramas: Hustle and the recent Jay Kelly with George Clooney.

One review of Jay Kelly summed up what Sandler has been tapping into lately:

'Sandler excels at playing these nice-guy characters, but he is also believable in the moments when Ben must pivot to ruthlessness - such as when he handles a vicious shakedown or tries to finagle a new part for Jay, whose career is on the downslide as he ages.'

Time Out feels right in that lane: a character who is trying to hold it all together until the lies catch up. Also, the Hoffman-as-dad angle should add some extra sting.

Meanwhile, a little awards-season cherry on top

As Jay Kelly has been picking up some awards-show attention, Sandler just nabbed the Career Achievement Award at AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards. He thanked his wife, Jackie, and closed with peak-Sandler bravado:

'I don't know how much time I have left - 60, 70 years. 80 tops, maybe 90 if I start working out and taking creatine.'

'I promise to everyone here tonight, I will make at least 50 more movies before I am dead - and at least 25 of them will be good.'

New remake, veteran co-star, Cooper behind the camera, and Sandler still sprinting. Add Time Out to the ever-expanding Netflix pile.
