A Surprising Beef The Sopranos' Star Has With Top Gun: Maverick
The actor is tired of all the Maverick praise.
While the Top Gun sequel proved to be one of the biggest hits of 2022, raking in over $1 billion at the global box office and getting nominated for several Oscars, it would appear that there are people in the industry who feel somewhat resentful of Tom Cruise's success.
It emerged recently that Ridley Scott isn't a fan of the movie. The iconic director remarked that his brother, who made the first Top Gun movie, created a genuinely original motion picture back in the day, while Joseph Kosinski didn't add anything new in the sequel. Now, another Hollywood heavyweight came down on Ridley Scott's side, albeit in an even more provocative manner.
Garbage Movie
A few weeks ago, actor Rob Iter, famous for his portrayal of A.J. Soprano on the iconic series The Sopranos, compared the highly successful blockbuster to junk food, going as far as to claim that Tom Cruise and his crew had forever ruined cinema with their follow-up on the cherished original.
'I think Top Gun [Maverick] ruined the whole movie industry. No, no, no, I think it ruined everything. It'll save it for four or five years because people are like, "Oh this is sh—!" It's like eating f—ing McDonald's or eating f—ing trash food. And then, all of a sudden, people are gonna turn around in four years and go, "Why do I feel bad?" Because you're watching garbage f—ing movies!' Iler said.
It's obvious Iler hates Maverick with a passion, not because of the movie's quality but because of how successful it was with critics. The actor explained in a later comment that what really pissed him off was the fact that the film got nominated for so many Oscars because, in his views, nominating an action flick like Maverick really devalues the Academy Awards and is an insult to the other films competing for them.
Well, as the saying goes, everybody is entitled to their own views on arts and entertainment, and the vast majority of Maverick fans didn't even bother to respond to Iler's vitriolic comments. Some might say it was out of respect for his opinion, but then again, chances are they just don't know who he is and don't care what he has to say.
