A Funny Blooper or an Important Detail? One Thing Abbott Elementary Fans Can't Stop Thinking About
So far, the show has been very meticulous in terms of subtle details...
Summary
- Part of Abbott Elementary's success can be attributed to its writing.
- Viewers are struck by the fact that Ms. Barbara Howard doesn't wear a name tag, unlike the rest of the teachers.
- It may be a detail that hints at Barbara's immense reputation, which makes an ID excessive.
When it comes to sitcoms, details are often irrelevant. After all, comedy isn't the most nuanced genre, relying as it does on comic situations and jokes that are relevant to the moment. However, there are more elaborate sitcoms. ABC's Abbott Elementary seems to be one of them.
The hit mockumentary series, created by Quinta Brunson, debuted in late 2021 and went on to become one of the most popular sitcoms on television. Over the course of its two-season run, Abbott Elementary has won over audiences with its portrayal of the work of a typical public educator in the U.S. and its cast of charismatic characters. But most of all, the show has become a success thanks to its impeccable and hilarious writing, which is why it comes as such a surprise to realize that AE may have had a very serious blooper.
But was it a blooper or a significant detail?
The Queen Doesn't Have an ID
As in actual public schools, teachers and other staff at Abbott Elementary are required to wear name tags in case a student or other visitor or parent wants to address them. But there's one notable exception to the rule. Sheryl Lee Ralph's Barbara Howard doesn't wear a nametag. And while it may seem like a total gaffe, it seems to be a very subtle detail about the character.
Abbott Elementary is so funny because its characters are tropes rather than real people, which makes their interactions truly spectacular. For example, Quinta Brunson's Janine Teagues is the overly enthusiastic and perpetually optimistic youngster who dreams of making the world a better place, and Barbara Howard is the revered and respected veteran teacher, or queen of the school. And just like the late Queen Elizabeth II, Ms. Howard doesn't need a badge to remind Abbott students of her name.
Reputation Is the Best Document
In that sense, it's probably not a gaffe that Barbara doesn't wear a name tag. She has worked at the school for decades, educating generations of students who will recognize her in their adult lives. For example, Draemond Winding, the CEO of Legendary Charter Schools who wanted to buy out Abbott where he went as a kid, still remembers Ms. Howard as his favorite teacher, even though she barely remembers him.
This goes to show that Barbara's experience and reputation are the best possible ID she could have.
'She is an OG in the school, everyone knows her, so she can come and go as she pleases. Also she's not there for the "nonsense" of wearing them,' noted one Redditor, referring to Ms. Howard's favorite phrase.
Season 3 of Abbott Elementary is currently airing. Episode 5 is scheduled to premiere on February 28th.
