Make it happen, ABC!

A procedural centered around the professional and personal lives of Los Angeles' first responders, 9-1-1 has gone through some troubles recently. The show was canceled by its original network, Fox, most likely because its production was too costly, and that outweighed the good ratings.

Fortunately, the rejected show has been picked up by ABC, which will produce and broadcast its seventh season. What's more, it looks that the network and 9-1-1 can both benefit from the move, as new opportunities open up for a crossover between ABC shows.

You see, ABC has another procedural series, The Rookie, which in a way is quite similar to 9-1-1. Both shows are set in modern-day Los Angeles, both feature LAPD, and overall, there are no drastic genre or tone differences between them.

There are even characters who can naturally bridge the spheres depicted in the two shows, such as The Rookie's Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan), and there are characters who look like they could become good friends if they ever meet. So given all that, the possibility for a crossover could not be more obvious!

Fans of both shows support the crossover idea, clamoring for it semi-seriously and pointing out how it could benefit the ratings for both shows. Most importantly, switching networks may result in declining viewership for 9-1-1, simply because the audiences do not completely overlap, while the ABC regulars might be unwilling to catch up with the new show's plot. In this case, a crossover would work nicely to introduce the ABC audience to 9-1-1 and bring more viewers to The Rookie as well.

'I want a crossover so badly! I can see Lucy and Maddie being besties! Tim & Buck too!' said one fan on Reddit.

'Or [the network can do a] spin-off prequel. Angela Bassett could play her younger self since she don't age,' another fan jokingly suggested.

'I think that best route for a crossover between both is have Bailey involved that inflicts with the 118 Firefighters and eventually spill onto Athena,' another Redditor added.

Of course, this crossover idea is nothing more than wishful thinking and fan speculation right now. However, we certainly hope that ABC will pick up the idea of fans, especially because a crossover seems like a natural development for the two shows and it's technically possible to implement.

Season 6 of 9-1-1 is currently airing on Fox, and the next episode will come out on May 8. The final episode of The Rookie Season 5 premiered on May 2. The next seasons of both shows are expected to air on ABC in 2024.
