8 Binge-Worthy Small Town TV Shows With Virgin River Vibes
Maybe Mel and Jack aren't irreplaceable.
Done with Virgin River but still looking for your fix of small-town drama? Then check out these shows that offer the same kind of escapism:
1. Hart of Dixie (Prime Video)
A comedy-drama starring Rachel Bilson as Zoe Hart, a New York doctor who takes over the family practice in Bluebell, Alabama, inherited from her estranged father. She's not exactly welcomed with open arms and has to adjust to small-town life. Sound familiar?
2. This Is Us (NBC.com, Hulu)
Mel Monroe actor Alexander Breckenridge stars in this drama that follows the lives of the Pearson family. The show combines present-day scenes with flashbacks to tell the family's story and, like Virgin River, tackles some big issues, interspersing them with love stories.
3. Sweet Magnolias (Netflix)
A story of friendship. Sweet Magnolias is the story of three girls, best friends since childhood, and how they support each other through the various trials and tribulations of adult life. Set in South Carolina, it begins with Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) going through a divorce.
4. Gilmore Girls (Netflix)
If you like your small town drama with a side serving of sass, this is the show for you. Focusing primarily on the lives of a single mother and her daughter, the show incorporates a cast of diverse characters that help bring the fictional town of Stars Hollow to life.
5. Schitt's Creek (Hulu)
A wealthy family goes bankrupt and moves to Schitt's Creek. Everything about their new town is foreign to them and they struggle to adjust to their new life as they are so different from their new neighbours, from the way they dress to the way they act.
6. Firefly Lane (Netflix)
Whatever you loved about Virgin River, Firefly Lane has it too. It's a medical drama that focuses on the lives, loves and friendship of Kate Mularkey (Sarah Clarke) and Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) over four decades.
7. Everwood (Prime Video, Freevee)
Another small town medical drama. This time it's a male doctor who, after the death of his wife, decides to pack up and move to somewhere a little quieter. He brings his two kids with him, and the show follows each of them as they face their new lives in Colorado.
8. Heartland (Netflix)
Amber Marshall stars as Amy Fleming in this Canadian comedy-drama about the impact of a mother's death on a family. It has interesting family dynamics, small-town charm and, of course, its fair share of romance.
