The Game of Thrones universe is expanding.

And with news breaking recently that another prequel, based on George R.R. Martin's novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg has been commissioned, thoughts have naturally turned to which Game of Thrones characters might put in an appearance.

The show is set around 90 years before the start of GoT and follows 'Egg' who would go on to become King Aegon V. So, clearly, there are plenty of characters who simply can't appear. But it might provide an opportunity to find out a bit more about some of the older characters from the original series.

1. Aerys II Targaryen

It's not yet confirmed how long the new prequel will last, but if it follows the same timeline as the complete set of novellas (of which there are three), we might see a young Aerys Targaryen – the Mad King who was eventually dethroned by Robert Baratheon.

2. Maester Aemon

Given the close relationship between Aemon and Egg, it seems likely he'll appear in the prequel. As revealed in Game of Thrones, the amiable Maester Aemon was once Aemon Targaryen. Unusually for Targaryen, Aemon was not hungry for power and chose the Night's Watch instead.

3. Brynden Rivers (Bloodraven)

The illegitimate son of King Aegon IV, Bloodraven, who Bran meets beyond the wall in Game of Thrones, is clearly old enough to appear in The Hedge Knight. He's also Targaryen by blood and was involved in quarrels with his half-siblings.

So, his story may cross with that of Egg at some point.

4. Olenna Tyrell

Superbly played as a no-nonsense powerhouse by the late Diana Rigg in GoT, it would be interesting to at least get a glimpse of how she came to be the woman we know – and who was, at one stage, betrothed to one of Egg's sons.

5. Old Nan

The oldest person in Winterfell, Old Nan has been around for a long time. And Martin has already said a future Duck and Egg novella will be set in Winterfell. So, even if we have to wait a while, we may just see the young version of Old Nan during the series.

6. Melisandre

When we see the Red Woman getting into bed in GoT, we realise she's significantly older than we first thought. So, it's fair to say she was alive at the time Duck and Egg is set.

There's no direct link that means her appearance is inevitable or even likely. But everyone loves a little cameo, so who knows?

7. Walder Frey

The novellas feature the wedding of one of Lord Frey's daughters. Present at the wedding is a very young (4-year-old) Walder Frey. Clearly, he's not key to the story, but if the wedding makes it into the show, we're sure to see the little Tyke at a reception that (presumably) ends on a better note than the one we saw in GoT.
