7 Best Series Like Stranger Things, According to Reddit
These shows will plunge you into mysteries you'll want to solve.
Stranger Things has captivated fans for seven years, and many of us are now rewatching the earlier seasons in anticipation of the show's fifth and final installment, expected to hit Netflix in late 2023 or next year. Even though it's virtually impossible to beat the hit series' unique 1980s vibe and unsettling mysteries, some shows actually come pretty close to that.
Fans over on Reddit have shared their favorite series that are just as compelling to watch as Stranger Things — here they are, ranked by their Rotten Tomatoes score.
7. Hemlock Grove (2013, 3 seasons, rated 38%)
Hemlock Grove is a small town inhabited by very poor and incredibly rich people, where some terrible experiments are being conducted in secret. The horror series follows the town's residents as they try to unravel those mysteries.
6. Riverdale (2017, 7 seasons, rated 81%)
Based on the popular Archie comics, Riverdale puts a lot of emphasis on the retro aesthetic, just like Stranger Things. Another similarity is that the show's main characters are teenagers who investigate gruesome murders and mystical events in their small town.
5. The OA (2016, 2 seasons, rated 85%)
Prairie Johnson, a formerly blind woman who disappeared seven years ago, returns home but refuses to tell her parents or the FBI where she had been and how she got her sight back. Like Stranger Things, the series delves in mysticism and explores the theme of traveling to parallel universes.
4. Sense8 (2015, 2 seasons, rated 86%)
This series shares many themes with Stranger Things. The main characters are eight people who find themselves telepathically connected and are pursued by a sinister organization that conducts experiments on humans.
3. A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017, 3 seasons, rated 86%)
Based on a children's novel series by Lemony Snicket, this black comedy drama has a very different tone compared to Stranger Things. However, the show also focuses on teenagers and their problems, following three orphans who lost their parents in a fire.
2. Dark (2017, 3 seasons, rated 95%)
After two children disappear mysteriously in a small German town, the locals find portals that can transport them to other time periods. Just like in Stranger Things, the characters of Dark have to explore the troubled history of their backwater town and unravel its secrets.
1. American Vandal (2017, 2 seasons, rated 98%)
This satirical mockumentary is, of course, drastically different from Stranger Things, as the events unfold in a rather mundane setting. With its plot revolving around some petty crimes involving high school students, American Vandal will prove to be a nice and joyful distraction for fans of Stranger Things.
