The only explanation we can think of for how this intense gothic murder mystery went so unnoticed is it's unfortunate January release date.
Based on the novel by the same name, and led by Christian Bale, The Pale Blue Eye follows a detective who is brought in to investigate a string of eerie murders in an icy New York in 1830. The slow-burn mystery delivers twists, and leaves you guessing until the very end.
6. Knock at the Cabin
Starting as a home invasion, Knock at the Cabin takes a dark psychological turn as the intruders deliver a disturbing ultimatum: one of the family must be sacrificed, or the apocalypse begins.
The movie is a lot to take in, and leaves you with a lot to think about, especially due to the lack of typical horror movie cliches.
5. The Boogeyman
Anything from the mind of Stephen King is bound to be delightfully frightening, and The Boogeyman delivers, with a classic child's tale brought to life in a disturbing and immersive way (you really won't want to turn the lights off after this one).
4. Infinity Pool
This unique horror explores the dark power that comes with wealth and privilege, where the elite escape punishment through the use of human clones.
It doesn't take long for this complex and unsettling story to unravel, as the lines between what, or who, is actually 'real' become eerily distorted.
3. Sick
We know you're probably 'sick' of movies and series that have to do with COVID-19, but Sick should be an exception. Sick is unique, creative, and features some biting commentary.
This slasher, set in the early days of the pandemic, takes you on a terrifying, adrenaline fuelled ride as friends isolating together realize that they are not as alone as they may have thought.
2. M3GAN
With this steady rise of robots and artificial intelligence, there was no better time for an unsettling movie on a life-sized robot doll with a mind of its own. M3GAN gives Chucky vibes, but with a more unorthodox and lighthearted approach to bringing a very real fear to life. With plenty of twists along the way.
