Which doctor do you think was the worst on the medical drama?

Throughout its 19-season run, Grey's Anatomy has featured hundreds of medical cases and numerous medical errors that have made many real-life doctors give the show a dirty look.

Fans have been discussing these mistakes for years, but we may finally have the list of Grey's Anatomy's worst medical mistakes ranked by Redditors in a poll organised in the subreddit dedicated to the show.

5. Meredith ruining Derek’s trial (S7E19)

A major storyline in seasons 7 and 8 involved Meredith Grey messing up Derek Shepherd's Alzheimer's trial. Guided by personal emotions, she switched the trial packs to ensure the chief's wife received the drug instead of the placebo. It was highly unethical and resulted in Derek being banned from ever conducting research again.

4. Alex miscalculating his patient's saline dosage (S2E10)

One of the most unnecessary deaths on the show occurred when Alex Karev's patient in Season 2 died because of Alex's medical error. The man had a tumour that caused him to be constantly thirsty and a sodium imbalance that meant he couldn't drink.

To balance his sodium levels, Alex ordered the patient to be given saline but got the dosage wrong, which sent the patient into a coma and ultimately caused his death.

3. April forgetting to check her patient’s throat (S6E6)

Another rookie mistake that led to a patient's death was made by April Kepner, who got distracted while examining a burn victim and forgot to check her throat. Unbeknownst to April, there was soot in the patient's throat, which started a chain reaction that led to her death. While it wasn't technically a lapse in judgement, and many fans have defended the doctor, April's seemingly minor mistake still cost her patient her life.

2. Bailey treating a patient without consent (S10E22)

The moment that jeopardised both Miranda Bailey's career and Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital occurred in Season 10 when Miranda administered an HIV-based gene therapy to her child patient without his parents' consent.

Although it saved the child's life, the parents filed a lawsuit against the hospital, and it took a fabricated story to get them to drop the charges.

1. Izzy cutting Denny's LVAD (S2E27)

One of the most memorable episodes of the show, and one of the biggest medical blunders, took place in the Season 2 finale when Izzie Stevens cut the wire to the machine supporting her boyfriend Denny Duquette's heart so that he could receive a donor heart without waiting his turn. Not only was this highly unethical, but it ended in tragedy. Although the transplant was successful, Denny died from complications of the surgery.
