Fans were shocked that these characters survived.

Although The Walking Dead has waned considerably over the course of its 11 seasons, most long-time viewers watched it through to the finale with great enthusiasm. And for lots of fans, it was surprising that some of the characters made it to the very end — some of them had a very different, much grimmer fate, in the comic book series, while others… well, many of us just wished they were gone for good.

Here's a list of The Walking Dead survivors who should've met their end before the finale.

5. Dianne

For many, Dianne proved to be a compelling character: as one of the best Kingdom soldiers, she certainly deserved to reach the Commonwealth, but viewers were still surprised that she made it to the end. From her introduction in Season 7, Dianne was mostly a background character with a minimum of lines, and no one expected her to survive until the finale.

4. Gabriel

From the beginning, few people liked Gabriel, who came across as a hypocritical coward judging other characters for their actions. Although he managed to earn Rick's respect and regain his faith in God, Gabriel's fate was rather brutal in the comics. In the show, however, he eventually redeemed himself and reached the Commonwealth, much to the surprise of fans.

3. Ezekiel

In the show, the Whisperers beheaded Ezekiel's adopted son Henry, but it was actually Ezekiel himself who died in the comics. According to fans, this made more sense because the whole story is about the old generation sacrificing themselves for the young in order to continue the existence of human society.

2. Eugene

Both in the comics and the show, Eugene has the same introduction, lying about being the scientist who knew how to defeat the virus. However, fans found the on-screen character to be way more unpleasant and sleazy. Eugene betrayed Alexandria by joining the Saviors but was then 'forgiven' by Rick's team when the time was right. This redemption doesn't sit well with fans, who thought that the character had to die to absolve his sins.

1. Negan

Yes, Negan is the character who survives in both the comics and the show, but many people were still not okay with his redemption. Given that he is responsible for thousands of deaths and horrible atrocities in the story, it was kind of weird that Negan survived, and fans will never forgive him for Glenn's death.
