These series will appeal to all fans of colonial American history.

One of the most important periods for the United States and North America in general is, of course, the colonial history, which combines both the heroism of the people who fought for freedom and the darker moments of the extermination of the indigenous population and the exploitation of black people.

One of the best shows to portray life in the Colonies well was the last four seasons of Outlander: despite the fantasy elements, the show did an excellent job of capturing both the domestic joys and the global horrors of the late 18th century, ending with the Second Battle of Saratoga. But let's take a look at some other excellent shows that faithfully portray the history of the colonial era:

5. Barkskins (2020, miniseries)

Although the events are set in New France rather than the Thirteen Colonies, it is a fascinating series that tells the story of an equally important period of colonial history. The plot revolves around the outcast English and French colonists and their plight in the late 17th century.

4. Sons of Liberty (2015, miniseries)

Produced for the History Channel, this miniseries is, as the title suggests, about the Sons of Liberty, the origins of the Continental Army that enabled the Colonies to obtain their independence from the British Empire. Set primarily in Boston, the series follows the bloody events from the founding of the Sons of Liberty to the Declaration of Independence.

3. The Book of Negroes (2015, miniseries)

This heartbreaking story tells of a West African woman who was enslaved by the colonists but managed to escape and join the Black Loyalists who collaborated with the British abolitionists.

2. Turn: Washington's Spies (2014, 4 seasons)
