Sometimes the real stories are much more frightening than the invented ones.

Netflix has released The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, continuing the anthology about terrible criminals. The previous season was dedicated to Jeffrey Dahmer. But Ryan Murphy is not the only one interested in the terrible crimes of the past.

There are five true crimes TV shows you should not miss.

1. The Watcher, 2022

The Brannock family – father Dean, mother Nora, eldest daughter Ellie and son Carter – move from New York to a posh house in a suburb. But relations with the neighbors are strained, and an unknown person regularly sends frightening letters.

The parents are overcome with paranoia, but the Brannocks are in no hurry to leave. The person who terrorizes the family who recently moved into the house could be anyone.

2. When They See Us, 2019

The series When They See Us moves away from direct political messages and focuses on broken lives.

The night of April 19, 1988. New York police officers beat a confession out of five boys between the ages of 13 and 16 to the rape of a woman. Neither the time of the incident nor the DNA samples found match.

The only important thing is that the teenagers were often seen in Central Park, where the crime took place. An absolutely monstrous story of ruined youth and long-awaited justice fits into five episodes.

3. Under the Bridge, 2024

In the early 2000s, journalist Rebecca Godfrey published the novel Under the Bridge. Reese Witherspoon bought the rights to adapt it, but it never made it to the big screen. It seems that a true crime story about one of the most high-profile murders in Canadian history is better suited to the series format.

In 1997, the body of a high school student of Indian descent was found in the provincial city of Victoria. Cam, a police officer, and Rebecca, a journalist, have to talk to the local youth to find out the circumstances of the girl's death.

4. Unbelievable, 2019

In 2016, journalists Ken Armstrong and T. Christian Miller won the Pulitzer Prize for their article An Inbeliveable Story of Rape. The shocking investigation became the basis for a miniseries.

Investigators Karen and Grace find commonalities in a dozen rape cases and realize that a serial killer is operating in several states. At the same time, the story of one of the victims, a teenage girl named Marie, who the police did not believe, is revealed.

5. The Staircase, 2022

The trial of crime writer Michael Peterson lasted 16 years. The French documentary filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade filmed the trial of the accused and sorted out the complicated case, which was reflected in the three-part project The Staircase. The series with Colin Firth and Toni Collette was no less interesting.

In December 2001, Michael and his wife Kathleen watched a movie, drank wine and parted by the pool. Michael stayed to enjoy the night sky, and his wife went inside to finish some work.

About half an hour later, Peterson found his wife at the top of the stairs leading to the second floor. There are no witnesses, and the husband is a suspect.
