5 Things Winona Ryder's Famous Exes Said About Her
The famous actress had quite a few boyfriends in her young years.
Back in the 1990s, Winona Ryder was one of the most talked-about actresses in Hollywood. She was starring in a lot of movies at the time, but her many affairs with other celebrities often stole the spotlight from her acting career. In later years, many of her former flames shared some pretty interesting thoughts about her.
Here are five things Winona Ryder's exes have said about the star.
Christian Slater
Winona and Christian first met on the set of the hit teen movie Heathers and apparently felt attracted to each other right away. Although the stars never officially dated, Slater seems to have very fond memories of the actress.
'I definitely love her today. She's a great actress. And that was a unique time for both of us,' Christian said.
Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp and Winona were one of the most popular couples of the early 90s, thanks to their sometimes weird antics, including Depp's infamous 'Winona Forever' tattoo. However, the couple called it quits after four years together, and it looks like the actor doesn't blame Ryder for their split.
'It's very hard to have a personal life in this town. My relationship with Winona, it was my mistake to be as open as we were, but I thought if we were honest, it would destroy that curiosity monster. Instead, it fed it, gave people license to feel they were part of it,' Depp said.
Dave Pirner
Soul Asylum frontman Dave Pirner dated Winona for two years, and their breakup was mutual, with no hard feelings from either celebrity. In addition, Pirner supported Winona during her shoplifting controversy, telling everyone that she was a great person, not a criminal.
'She's not a criminal. I've got nothing but good things to say about her,' Pirner said.
Matt Damon
Damon and Ryder dated for two years starting in 2000 and enjoyed a lot of public attention at the time. However, the two actors just weren't right for each other and amicably ended their relationship, with Damon still supporting Winona during her shoplifting accusations.
'When she was being pilloried in the press, to me it was like, "This too shall pass" — that somehow her true colors would come out and she would get past it because she's a great woman,' the actor said.
Charlie Sheen
Rumor has it Ryder and Sheen dated briefly in the 1980s, and while neither of them ever commented on their alleged romantic relationship, Sheen is taking credit for inventing the actress' stage name during one of their parties.
'We were listening to The Doors, to "Riders on the Storm." [Winona's] real name is Horowitz. And I said, "You know, I'm thinking Winona Ryder sounds cool",' Sheen said.
