You may have seen two of these last year…

Believe it or not, superhero fatigue is real. And the worse a superhero movie is, the more acute the feeling. These five movies will make you take a break from Marvel and DC for a while.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023, 5.9 on IMDb)

One of the most disappointing releases of 2023, this movie is a perfect example of why people are tired of superhero movies. The second installment of the Shazam! leg of the DCEU is completely unimpressive and fails to hold the audience's attention for a second, despite an all-star cast that includes Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu in addition to Zachary Levi. The story is simply too much to stand up to anything.

The movie grossed only $134 million against a budget of $125 million.

The Marvels (2023, 5.6 on IMDb)

Last year's biggest flop angered many Marvel fans, who realized that the MCU may have gone too far with its multiverse narrative. Following Brie Larson's Carol Denvers in her new space adventures, the film tells the story of the dying Kree Empire and the mysterious effects their actions have on Denvers and two other superheroes, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. The story failed to impress audiences despite the masterful use of CGI.

The Marvels grossed $206 million against a $220-million budget.

Daredevil (2003, 5.3 on IMDb)

This pre-Disney Marvel movie was quite successful financially, earning $179 million against a $78 million budget, but it was painful to watch. The movie focuses on Matt Murdock, who lost his sight as a child due to exposure to radioactive waste, and leads a double life. By day, he's a lawyer at a prestigious firm. By night, Matt is a vigilante who takes on New York's many criminals. But apart from Ben Affleck in a tight costume, the movie was not very captivating.

Fantastic Four (2015, 4.3 on IMDb)

Starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell, the recent remake of the popular superhero story was a disaster. The film tells the origin story of the titular scientists-turned-superheroes as they build a portal to another dimension and embark on a journey there. The mission proves disastrous, and one of the scientists is presumed dead. However, when the mission is repeated years later, it is discovered that the man is alive and seeking revenge on his home planet, so the Fantastic Four must stop him.

The film grossed $168 million against a $120-million budget.

Catwoman (2004, 3.4 on IMDb)

Although the movie has a beautifully mystical beginning that ties the story to Egyptian myths, it turns out to be utterly frustrating as the plot of the film remains none too clear throughout. Catwoman is bland and uneventful. There's little CGI to impress the audience. The source material isn't honored in the film. And there's almost no connection to the overall DC Universe.

Catwoman underperformed at the box office, earning $82 million against a $100 million budget.
