What do Harry Potter and Twilight have in common?

Fans may be surprised that it goes a lot deeper than supernatural powers, werewolves, love triangles, and a battle between Good and Evil.

In both franchises, fans watch the characters grow, face otherworldly challenges along with everyday personal challenges, and fall in love along the way, but there's even more in common between the two than all of that.

1. Robert Pattinson

Pattinson acted in both Harry Potter and Twilight. He made his acting breakthrough with his 2005 role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but it was his Twilight performance that shot him to fame. This might be because his character Cedric Diggory only appeared in one Harry Potter movie, where he was killed by Peter Pettigrew during the Triwizard Tournament.

Either way, Pattinson started his career with a tendency to play supernatural roles, one as an unfortunate wizard and another as a sparkling vampire.

2. Unsettling villains

Harry Potter and Twilight both have some pretty evil villains. In Harry Potter, it's Lord Voldemort, whose obsession with pure blood dominance sees him on a mission to conquer both the wizarding world and the Muggle world.

In Twilight, it's the Volturi, the largest and most powerful vampire coven. The Volturi's determination to keep vampires secret led to them punishing both vampires and humans with death. Both villains are unsettling, evil, and ruthless in enforcing their vision and beliefs.

3. Keeping their abilities secret

In both movie franchises, the supernatural world is kept secret from the human world. In Harry Potter, wizards are prohibited from using magic in front of humans, and in Twilight, vampires must avoid the sunlight or the sparkle of their skin will expose their secret to humans. In both cases revealing the supernatural to humans is punished severely, sometimes by death.

4. Love triangles

Harry Potter focuses more on friendship, and Twilight more on romance, but this didn't stop both from having their main characters involved in a love triangle. In Twilight, it's between Bella, Edward, and Jacob, with Bella and Jacob being close friends and having the potential to fall in love, which resulted in Edward and Jacob in a subtle battle for Bella's affection.

In Harry Potter there is a love triangle involving Hermione, Ron, and Viktor Krum, and another involving Harry, Cho Chang, and Cedric Diggory (played by Robert Pattinson).

5. Werewolves

Harry Potter was all about wizards, and Twilight may have focused more on vampires, but both franchises had werewolves. The main werewolf in Harry Potter is Remus Lupin, and in Twilight it is Jacob Black, and fans are also introduced to the rest of his werewolf pack.

Bonus point:

Both franchises have survived past the era in which they were most popular, and today are still familiar favorites among fans or being discovered for the first time by the next generation of film audiences.
