5 Reasons to Watch The Great Now That Season 3 is Out
Who knew you'd want to root for characters who don't mind killing each other?
The third season of The Great has just arrived. Hulu's series about the notoriously powerful Empress of the Russian Empire, Catherine II aka The Great, began as an occasionally true story and transitioned seamlessly into almost complete fiction.
The anti-historical black comedy is full of absurd humor, intriguing plot twists, and great costumes — so if you haven't seen it yet, we totally recommend it. Here are five strong reasons that make The Great so binge-worthy.
5. Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning have great chemistry
One of the main arguments is, of course, the series' great cast. While each individual actor gives an excellent performance, it is certainly Hoult and Fanning who steal the spotlight. The characters they play, Emperor Peter III and Empress Catherine II, are hilariously absurd, and they also have great chemistry together!
4. It motivates you to delve into history
Even though the creators themselves can't be bothered with portraying historical facts accurately and stick to satirical fiction instead, there are still moments that will make you open up Wikipedia (at the very least). No, seriously — watching The Great gives you good food for thought and makes you think critically about history and today's time.
3. It was written by the creator of The Favourite
Maybe the argument is too specific, but if you saw The Favourite and liked that black period comedy, you will definitely like The Great. The show was written by the same person, Tony McNamara, and is even more satirical about history and the power of privileged elites.
2. Storytelling can be both comic and tragic
One moment, you can laugh at Peter's ridiculousness, and the next second, you'll cry over Catherine's struggles. Of course, it's not always as much of a roller-coaster, but the show certainly strikes a balance between comedy and drama.
1. The Great is just incredibly funny!
But it's a comedy first of all, so there are more laughs and absurd situations than tears. From the murderous dynamic between Peter and Catherine to the skirmish with the King of Sweden, who suddenly decides to become Peter's best friend, there is no shortage of chuckles.
The production of the fourth season of The Great hasn't been confirmed yet, but it is most likely a matter of time. Meanwhile, you can watch the three available seasons on Hulu.
