5 Overlooked Netflix Movies With High RT Scores You Probably Missed
Poignant drama, relevant horror, and nostalgic animation.
Netflix began producing its own films in 2015 and has since released more than 500, not only blockbusters, but also recognized classics like Roma, The Marriage Story, and Uncut Gems.
Unfortunately, some of the worthy movies have failed to find an audience.
1. The Dig, 2021
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%
Widow Edith Pretty owns a large estate and is raising her son alone. She hires archaeologist Basil Brown to study the burial mounds on her property.
At first he is abrupt and dismissive. Gradually, however, he becomes not only interested in the work, but also in Edith herself. But the woman turns out to be seriously ill.
On the one hand, this is a historical drama about a quiet, sad love set against the backdrop of archaeological discoveries. On the other hand, the action takes place before the start of the Second World War, so the atmosphere is filled with fear and anticipation of tragedy.
2. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, 2020
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%
On a hot summer day in 1927, famous blues singer Ma Rainey arrives at a Chicago studio to record. For the most part, she is accompanied by older musicians who know their place.
But a young, ambitious trumpeter named Levee enters the group with dreams of becoming a star. During breaks between recordings, anxious conversations about creativity and justice begin.
Chadwick Boseman, known for his role as Black Panther, played his last and perhaps best role in this movie. The action takes place over the course of one day and in one studio. Nevertheless, this film can be considered a true cross-section of the era.
3. The Lost Daughter, 2021
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%
Professor Leda Caruso is on vacation in Greece. One day she helps a young mother, Nina, to find her lost daughter. Communication begins between the two very different women. All this plunges Leda into memories of an act she cannot forgive herself for.
Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut with an emotional drama. The relaxed atmosphere of a warm resort is mixed with worries about the past and attempts to understand oneself.
4. Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood, 2022
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%
Young Stan lives in 1960s Houston, playing with his friends, fighting with his siblings, and dreaming of adventure. Then one day, secret agents from NASA recruit him for a secret mission.
The engineers have accidentally made the lunar module too small, and only one child can fit inside. So Stan goes to the moon as part of the Apollo 10½ mission. But he can't tell anyone.
Richard Linklater made a charming, nostalgic movie about the 1960s and dreams of space. To make the atmosphere even more heart-warming, the story is told through the experiences of a child.
5. Cam, 2018
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93%
Alice works as a camgirl and dreams of becoming popular one day. But then she discovers that she can't log into her account, and instead of her, a certain Lola is broadcasting – and she is her copy. Alice tries to figure out if it's a tricky digital technology or a planned deception.
This intense horror thriller raises important issues that are becoming more and more relevant every year: the difference between real life and the image on the Internet, the theft of profiles and even identity.
