5 Outlander Episodes That Cross the Line for Even the Most Die-Hard Fans
Outlander, the critically acclaimed historical drama based on Diana Gabaldon's novels, has captured the hearts of millions around the world thanks to its unique concept.
But in addition to the show's breathtaking scenery and compelling characters, the series has gained a reputation for its graphic depiction of violence and trauma.
The show's willingness to push boundaries and tackle sensitive topics, however, has not been without controversy - some of these episodes cross the line for even the most devoted Outlander fans.
Season 1 Episode 16
In the previous episode, we see that Jamie Fraser is in Wentworth Prison, sentenced to be hanged until Captain Black Jack Randall intervenes and has him placed in a cell. Despite fans' hopes for Jamie's rescue following the ominous ending of episode 15, their hopes were destroyed upon seeing the opening scene of the following episode, which featured a naked Jamie with Black Jack behind him.
This suggested that something terrible had already occurred and that Jamie's fate would only worsen - and it did (for basically an entire episode).
This episode was so graphic and gut-wrenching that it left fans reeling in shock and disgust, leaving some unable to continue watching the rest of the series.
Season 2 Episode 4
Claire stays longer at the hospital, tending to some work. Upon leaving, Murtagh discovers their carriage has a broken wheel, forcing them to walk home through dark and dangerous streets. As they walk, Mary Hawkins confides in Claire about her romantic interest in Alex Randall, but their conversation is cut short when they are ambushed by attackers.
In the chaos, Murtagh is quickly overpowered, and one of the attackers seizes Claire, leaving her powerless as poor Mary is assaulted.
Season 2 Episode 7
One night, Claire hears Fergus having a nightmare and wakes him up. Fergus then reveals that when he went to a brothel with Jamie, he saw a bottle of lavender perfume in one of the rooms and went in to steal it to bring it back as a gift.
However, Black Jack had walked in on him and started sexually assaulting him.
Thankfully, Jamie had heard his screams, came running, and challenged Black Jack to a duel. Although the ending is good, the entire flashback is not for the faint of heart.
Season 4 Episode 8
Upon Bree's return to the tavern, she encounters Stephen Bonnet, who is gambling and proposes a deal involving Claire's ring. She understands he wants to sell it to her, but it quickly becomes clear that he has sinister intentions. She tries to get away, but he stops her and starts to assault her.
Despite Bree's cries for help, everyone in the tavern continues to drink and have fun as if nothing is happening. While this episode didn't depict the act graphically, and the writers' attempt to convey the historical reality of how often women's sufferings were disregarded is commendable, it was a very tough watch nevertheless.
Season 5 Episode 12
Claire is attacked and abducted by Lionel Brown and his men, who tie her to a tree, injured and covered in blood. While in captivity, she fantasizes about a different version of her life to help cope with her reality, though she's struggling.
Unfortunately, the worst thing imaginable happens - Lionel and his nephew assault Claire, and Lionel then asks the other men to join in.
The scene is mostly shot in dim lighting and relies on suggested imagery, audio effects, and the grim, emotionless look on Claire's face. However, this is perhaps the most brutal and emotional season finale since season 1, and it left some viewers nauseous for days.
