5 Movies That Were Outsiders at the 2025 Oscars, but Are Still 100% Worth Watching

These flicks deserve much more attention.
The 97th Academy Awards just ended. Movies with a large number of nominations are on everyone's lips and are actively discussed: Anora, The Brutalist, The Substance and Conclave.
However, the list of Academy favorites includes several other equally worthy films that are talked about much less – and completely undeservedly.
1. Nosferatu, 2024
Real estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to the Carpathian Mountains to close a deal with the reclusive Count Orlok. Hutter's young wife, Ellen, has a premonition of something terrible and begs her husband not to go.
Her fears are confirmed, and it soon becomes clear that Ellen is the cause of the misfortunes that have befallen her loved ones.
The director of The Witch and The Lighthouse Robert Eggers has once again created a visually perfect film. He brought the horror story of an ancient vampire closer to the realities of the time and recreated a medieval city in the midst of a plague.
2. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, 2024
A new installment of the clay adventures of two friends – Wallace and his overly intelligent dog, Gromit. Wallace is working on a new invention – a mechanical garden gnome that will help farmers plant their crops. Gromit is skeptical about the invention.
His fears are confirmed when the robot becomes conscious. Meanwhile, in the animal prison, an old friend of Wallace and Gromit's is preparing to escape.
3. The Girl with the Needle, 2024
The story is set in Denmark in 1919. During the war, the husband of Karoline, a seamstress, disappears. She becomes pregnant by the boss of the weaving mill and he leaves her.
Karoline's husband soon returns home with a disfigured face. Then the woman gets a job with a good-natured woman named Dagmar, hoping that she will help her find a foster family for the child. But it turns out that the woman is hiding a terrible secret.
This is an extremely dark, joyless and uncomfortable movie that critics have compared to the early works of Lars von Trier.
4. Memoir of a Snail, 2024
Grace Pudel, a schoolgirl and snail fan, lives with her twin brother and alcoholic father. After the death of their parents, the siblings are separated and sent to different foster homes.
Grace ends up in the home of her absent foster parents. She soon meets an eccentric old lady named Pinky, who teaches her a lot.
Memoir of a Snail is an adult animation about the complexities of human relationships that is unlikely to appeal to children. The story is largely autobiographical, based on episodes from the author's own life.
5. Maria, 2024
A biopic about the famous opera diva Maria Callas. The movie shows the woman at the end of her career – she remembers her creative path and communicates with an imaginary interviewer. Meanwhile, the household does everything to bring the woman back to real life.
Maria is the final film in Pablo Larrain's thematic trilogy of biopics about the tragic fates of women. He previously filmed the biographies of Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy – Spencer and Jackie.
