One Piece has demonstrated that Netflix is capable of delivering excellent adaptations.

Netflix's live-action adaptations have attracted substantial attention. For instance, take the ongoing buzz around the recent adaptation of The Witcher. However, when it comes to anime and manga adaptations, fans have often been left disappointed, as evidenced by the less-than-stellar receptions of 2017's Death Note and 2021's Cowboy Bebop.

That said, the tide appears to be turning, with Alice in Borderland and One Piece impressing both fans of the original intellectual properties and newcomers alike. Furthermore, Netflix is gearing up to release new live-action projects that promise to maintain this high standard of quality and success.

A live-action series based on the renowned manga by Yoshihiro Togashi is set for release this December. The story centres around a teenage delinquent who, after dying and descending into a Buddhist hell, returns to the human world to investigate supernatural phenomena. The series is being produced by Robot Communications, the company behind Alice in Borderland, suggesting that viewers can expect an equally high-quality product.

4. Avatar: The Last Airbender

One of the most eagerly anticipated projects is the adaptation of the iconic animated series by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, slated for release in 2024. Unlike M. Night Shyamalan's live-action film, this adaptation aims to stay true to the original, including its casting, and to respectfully depict the fantasy cultures inspired by Asian and Native American traditions.

3. My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular superhero IPs, challenging industry giants like Marvel and DC. So, it's no surprise that fans were thrilled to learn last year that Netflix was developing a live-action film in partnership with Legendary Pictures. While a release date is yet to be announced, the film will be directed by Shinsuke Sato of Alice in Borderland fame, with Joby Harold (known for Obi-Wan Kenobi) handling the script.

2. Sword Art Online

The adaptation of this anime, which is itself an adaptation of a novel about virtual reality MMORPGs, was announced back in 2018. Unfortunately, no further details have been released since then. However, we do know that Laeta Kalogridis, the creator of Altered Carbon and a contributor to the successful manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel, is involved in the project.

1. Death Note

It seems Netflix is ready to make amends, as the service plans to revisit Death Note, originally penned by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. Adding to the excitement, the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, will be collaborating on this project with screenwriter Halia Abdel-Meguid. However, there is no release date yet, as the project is still in its early stages.
