The event was obscenely chic.

Celebrities' lavish lifestyles are one of the reasons people enjoy following them – it's intriguing to delve into the habits of the rich and famous, especially those few people could afford. However, fans' admiration has its limits and can easily turn into annoyance. After all, most people look down on excessive extravagance.

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's wedding in July 2000 might just epitomise that extravagance. Although the pair sadly divorced in 2005 – they could have celebrated their twenty-third anniversary a few weeks ago – their legendary wedding continues to resonate in the memories of fans and guests. It was a sensation at the time. However, such an A-list event might not be as well received by today's standards. Here are just five reasons why.

Guest List

To give you a sense of the wedding's scale, there were over two hundred guests, including Aniston and Pitt's co-stars, Courteney Cox and Edward Norton. The ceremony was held under a massive custom-built marquee by the seashore in Malibu, California.

Stellar Performances

The guests included renowned musicians like Billy Preston, Melissa Etheridge, and Radiohead, all of whom put on performances during the reception. Their fees were undoubtedly substantial, but more on that later.

Firework Displays

It was also reported that the aforementioned musical performances were accompanied by grand firework displays reminiscent of those major cities put on on the 4th of July. It seems Aniston and Pitt knew how to, metaphorically speaking, burn money.

'A Wall of Caviar'

Michael Rapaport, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay's on-screen boyfriend Gary on Friends and was fortunate to receive a wedding invitation, shared that guests were indulged with an array of delicacies, including caviar.

'I was at Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's wedding. They had a wall of caviar. I still have some saved over…' the actor revealed to Andy Cohen in a recent episode of his podcast, Watch What Happens Live.

Budget

As for the finances, the total budget for Pitt and Aniston's wedding was never disclosed. However, rumours suggest they spent a staggering $1 million on celebrity performances alone. Considering that, the overall cost must have been nothing short of astronomical.
