Any of these would have been better for the show.

Since premiering in 2019, Virgin River has been one of Netflix's most popular shows – thanks largely to its warm, small-town vibe. However, the romantic drama has had its fair share of issues, the most infamous of which is undoubtedly Charmaine's five-season pregnancy.

Obviously, it's annoying, so here are five alternatives for how the storyline could have played out.

Quicker Resolution

First of all, there was no reason for Charmaine's pregnancy to last a whopping five seasons of the show. Sure, Virgin River has a messed up timeline and even worse pacing, but that is no excuse for the length of Charmaine's pregnancy. Needless to say, it drove a lot of viewers crazy. And it would have been better if she had given birth much earlier on the show.

Free Jack!

Perhaps the biggest problem Virgin River fans had with Charmaine's pregnancy was that it got in the way of Mel and Jack's happiness. As a reasonably decent man, Jack, who was led to believe that he was the father of the twins, felt it was his duty to take care of Charmaine and her future children. If only the pregnancy hadn't lasted so long and Charmaine had had the twins when Jack called an ambulance for her earlier in the show, he would have learned much faster that he had nothing to do with the children and her. The drama would have been over and Mel and Jack would have become a couple sooner.

A Fake Pregnancy

Another great choice for drama would have been a fake pregnancy. It could have turned out that Charmaine was just trying to keep Jack from leaving her for Mel with a baby, so she lied about being pregnant. Of course, the ruse would have been discovered soon enough for Jack and Mel not to waste precious time apart.

Childbirth Death

It may seem overly dramatic and tragic, but Charmaine could have died in labor, which would have ended her story. Mel and Jack, having just suffered a miscarriage, would have taken care of Charmaine's twins and become the parents they always wanted to be.

A Happy Ending

On the other hand, Charmaine could have been spared the tragedy and had her own happy ending. Perhaps she could have met someone who would make her happy and take care of her and her children. Charmaine would have fallen in love with them, leaving Mel and Jack alone, and everyone would have been idyllically happy.
