Zohran Mamdani toppled former governor Andrew Cuomo to seize City Hall, a seismic win that reenergizes Democrats even as Republicans control Washington — and it has WWE legends and current stars roaring their approval.

Politics crossed the ropes this week. New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani beat former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and the reaction did not just come from City Hall watchers. A bunch of wrestling names chimed in too. Call it a pretty big W for Democrats, especially with Republicans currently running things nationally.

Sami Zayn

Former WWE United States Champion Sami Zayn has apparently been friendly with Mamdani for a bit. On June 22, 2025, Zayn popped onto X and tagged the now-mayor-elect while he was in town, writing: "I'm in NYC where you at @ZohranKMamdani?" Mamdani replied, "Send me a DM!" - though the timestamp on his response shows June 21, 2025. Time zones? Posting quirks? Either way, they were trying to link up offline, which tells you there is already a rapport there. Safe bet The Underdog from the Underground was more than a little happy with the election night result.

CM Punk

World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, Chicago through and through, made his stance pretty loud on November 5. He shared a lengthy Chicago Teachers Union statement to his Instagram story celebrating Mamdani's win and the coalition behind it, with a not-subtle nod to policies aimed at helping low-income families. The statement itself read:

Two years ago, a multiracial, multiethnic, and multigenerational movement of everyday voters elected a middle school teacher - son of Black migrants who utilized the Greenbook to escape the horrors of Mississippi's fascist Jim Crow Laws - to lead the city of Chicago. And tonight, in New York City, that same powerful coalition of working-class people has done it again - this time electing the son of an immigrant, Zohran Mamdani, as the next mayor of the largest city in the country.

More than just bold policies that make the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share, Mamdani's campaign modeled a new path forward for both the country and the Democratic Party. Rather than merely talking about Black, Latine, LGBTQIA+, and immigrant voters, his campaign showed up by listening and building trust and power. They didn't just ask for votes; they built a movement that honors the needs of low income and poor families.

So yeah, Punk was not exactly playing coy about where he landed on this one.

Mansoor (now in AEW)

Quick refresher: Mansoor Al-Shehail became a regular on WWE TV around 2019, later shortened his ring name to Mansoor, left WWE in September 2023, and signed with AEW in July 2024. His reaction to Mamdani's win was... not delicate. On November 5, he posted a victory lap that both cheered the result and referenced former Vice President Dick Cheney's reported death two days earlier. He also called out that New York City just elected a Muslim mayor.

DICK CHENEY IS DEAD AND A MUSLIM IS MAYOR OF NYC WE UP

Subtlety is not the brand, apparently.

For what it's worth, Mamdani is a wrestling fan himself, and based on this week, the feeling is mutual. If you spotted other wrestlers backing him during the race or after the win, drop them in the comments. I'm curious who else showed up.
