3 Ways The Witcher Could Fix Yennefer & Geralt Relationship in Season 3
'Could' does not mean 'would.'
The Witcher Season 2 had one serious problem, which many fans criticized after they watched the last episode in December 2021 — the relationship between Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. The three characters forming a powerful bond, with Ciri becoming like an adopted daughter to Geralt and Yennefer, is a crucial development that's required to make the second half of the plot work.
But with where the show left off in Season 2, the characters are still far from being a family, and to start with, the writers really need to do something to fix the relationship between Geralt and Yennefer.
The characters should have already become close, but we didn't see that happening in Season 2. First, there was no mother-daughter bonding between Yennefer and Ciri. In fact, Yen wanted to sacrifice Ciri to get her arcane power back, and though she changed her mind at the last moment, her vicious intention poisoned their interactions and almost shattered her relationship with Geralt, which was already fairly strained.
Geralt actually said he'd never forgive Yennefer or trust her again — so how can the writers mend this in the upcoming Season 3?
One solution is to devote the first part of Season 3 to Geralt and Yennefer's romance alone, forming a sort of mini arc to show how they gradually rebuilt their trust. This seems to be the option the show's writers chose to use, according to the few pieces of information we have about the upcoming season (which is now in post-production). While this option may seem rather clumsy, it may also please some fans who complained about the lack of focus on the characters' love story earlier in the show.
Another way to mend Yen and Geralt's relationship is to put her in a situation where, like in Season 2, she'd have a chance to atone for her sins and prove her trustworthiness.
When she tried to sacrifice herself for Ciri in the second season finale, her decision didn't make much impact on Geralt or viewers, as everything happened too quickly and at no real cost to her. In fact, it didn't feel like a self-sacrifice at all because Yennefer ended up getting what she wanted!
Season 3 could make her throw herself between Ciri and death again — but this time, Geralt should be impressed by her act.
The third option is always possible in the world of fantasy — just conjure some mystical mumbo jumbo specifically meant to certify Yennefer's trustworthiness and make Geralt believe he can rely on her again. This solution is dumb and uninspired, and it's not welcomed by fans at all, but considering how much mess the writers have already managed to achieve with the story, there's no guarantee they won't opt for this dubious plot device to fix Yen and Geralt's relationship in Season 3.
The Witcher Season 3 is expected to hit the screens this summer.
