20 Years Later, Netflix Revives Sweet Home Alabama
A 2000s rom-com classic is suddenly surging on Netflix, winning a new generation and sparking a full-blown nostalgia binge.
Every so often, a movie sneaks back into the zeitgeist and grabs a new crowd. This week, that honor goes to a 2002 Reese Witherspoon rom-com that suddenly muscled its way back onto Netflix like it never left.
The Netflix bump, explained
'Sweet Home Alabama' popped up in Netflix's Top 10 more than two decades after its theatrical run and, for the week of Feb. 2–Feb. 8, landed at No. 5. The numbers are eye-catching: 4.4 million views and 8 million hours watched. For a comfort-movie rewatch, that is a real surge.
It even edged past a few familiar titles clogging the streaming lanes: the 2018 remake of 'Overboard,' Ben Stiller's 'Night at the Museum,' and the Gerard Butler thriller 'Copshop.' It has since slipped out of the Top 10, but the spike was real.
Quick refresher: what the movie is
Premiering Sept. 27, 2002, 'Sweet Home Alabama' stars Reese Witherspoon as a New York fashion designer who heads back to her small Southern hometown to finally divorce the estranged husband she left behind. Andy Tennant directed from a script by C. Jay Cox, and the movie leans hard into fish-out-of-water charm with a side of messy romance.
Old-school box office flex
Back in the day, this thing was a hit. Budgeted at $30 million, it cleared $180 million worldwide. Opening weekend came in a hair over $35 million, which set a new record for the biggest September debut at the time, taking the crown from 1998's 'Rush Hour.' Wild stat: that September opening record held for a full decade until 'Hotel Transylvania' took it in 2012.
So why the sudden resurgence?
Timing helps. We're brushing up against Valentine's Day, which reliably lifts rom-coms across every platform. Even with a cool critical reception back in 2002, audiences have stuck with it; the film carries a 78% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the cozy factor still plays.
Meanwhile, two leading men are back in the spotlight. Josh Lucas has been showing up on 'Yellowstone' as a younger John Dutton in flashbacks. Patrick Dempsey is currently headlining the Fox crime drama 'Memory of a Killer.' Put those together with a wave of TikTok valentines nudging people toward easy-watch comfort food, and you get a neat little streaming pop.

Bottom line
Two decades on, 'Sweet Home Alabama' still has pull. A little seasonal timing, a couple of familiar faces back in circulation, and some algorithmic wind at its back were enough to push it past newer, louder titles. New to you?
