Two new staff members join Skeldale House.

All Creatures Great and Small, the popular series about veterinarians working in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, has some delightful news for its fans: season 4 is in production, and it looks like the fictional village of Darrowby will be welcoming new residents.

The show is based on a semi-autobiographical book series by James Herriot, and the new season is set in the midst of World War II as Great Britain, with Winston Churchill at the helm, faces off against Nazi Germany. It is during these dark times that Skeldale House will welcome two new staff members.

The third season concluded with a heartbreaking cliffhanger as Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) decided to enlist in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps to prove his worth and contribute to his country's war effort. His older brother Seigfried (Samuel West), the owner of Skeldale House, pleaded with Tristan not to go, but deep down inside, he understood that his little brother was undertaking an important task and tearfully bid him farewell on the platform.

From this point forward, the people of the Yorkshire Dales will face challenging times. Meanwhile, Siegfried and the protagonist, James (Nicholas Ralph), left without the ever-jovial Tristan, will continue to serve the country in their unique way, tending to the animals on site.

Joining the two veterinarians is a new employee, played by James Anthony-Rose, known for the series Masters of the Air. His character, Richard Carmody, is a talented but inexperienced veterinary student at the University of Edinburgh who has already met Tristan. He may not completely fill Tristan's shoes, but he will undoubtedly offer a fascinating story arc.

Another addition to the cast is actress Neve McIntosh, known for her guest roles in Doctor Who and her recurring role in Shetland. She will portray Miss Harbottle, a character familiar from Herriot's first novel. She then served as Siegfried's hired secretary and bookkeeper at Skeldale House, with whom the clinic owner often butted heads due to Miss Harbottle's strict and overbearing demeanour.

Except for Callum Woodhouse, all of the actors from the previous three seasons will reprise their roles. As in the past, showrunner Ben Vanstone will serve as executive producer, although he will no longer be the primary writer. That position will now go to co-screenwriter Jamie Crichton, who will also serve as executive producer.

Season 4 of All Creatures Great and Small is slated for release in early 2024 and will be broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK and PBS in the United States.
