15 Movies About Exorcism That Are Highly Rewatchable (And No, The Exorcist is Not on the List)
The Exorcist: Believer reminded us once again just how creepy and disturbing this sub-genre can be.
Here are some of the demon-driven dramas that are not only unforgettable, but also highly rewatchable.
1. Deliver Us From Evil (2014)
This one's got the whole cop-meets-demonic-possession vibe going for it. NYPD officer Ralph Sarchie is your typical tough-guy cop. While investigating a series of crimes, he partners with Mendoza, a priest-cum-exorcist. They discover that a trio of soldiers unleashed a demonic force while serving in Iraq. The climax? A gruesome exorcism in a police interrogation room.
2. The Rite (2011)
Inspired by true events, which already sends shivers down my spine. Michael Kovak is a skeptical seminary student who's sent to study exorcism at the Vatican. Talk about a career turn, right? He meets Father Lucas, an unorthodox priest who shows him the ropes—or should I say, the crosses? They confront a pregnant teen possessed by her dead father's spirit. But wait, the twist? Father Lucas himself gets possessed.
3. The Last Exorcism (2010)
You've got your shaky cam, your faux documentary, and your fire-and-brimstone preacher, all wrapped up in one. Reverend Cotton Marcus, a fraudulent exorcist, aims to expose himself by filming a "last exorcism" on a farm girl named Nell. As the crew delves deeper into the ritual, they realize that Nell's possession isn't a hoax. Animals are sacrificed, crosses are turned upside down, and Marcus finally believes.
4. The Possession (2012)
Clyde, a recently divorced dad, gets his daughter Em a seemingly innocent box at a yard sale. Big mistake. Em becomes increasingly malevolent, and the box turns out to contain a dislocated Jewish spirit, a dybbuk. Clyde teams up with a Hasidic rabbi for an untraditional exorcism, subbing out Latin for Hebrew.
5. Emily Rose (2005)
Based on a true story, this one is a courtroom drama with a horror twist. Father Moore performs an exorcism on Emily Rose, a college girl with a severe case of what they believe to be demonic possession. Emily dies during the exorcism, and Father Moore is charged with negligent homicide. The movie cuts between courtroom scenes and flashbacks of Emily's torments, complete with demonic voices and bodily contortions.
6. Grace: The Possession (2014)
In Grace, you see the world through the eyes of Grace, a shy, sheltered college girl. She's raised by her super religious grandma, but college life exposes her to more than just academic freedom. She starts experiencing disturbing visions and even harms herself. Is it teen angst or something more sinister? Eventually, even her priest can't handle it, and an exorcism is in order.
7. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Alzheimer's as a cover for possession, now there's an angle! Deborah Logan, an elderly woman suffering from Alzheimer's, becomes the subject of a documentary. As they film, the crew notices increasingly strange behaviors that can't be explained by dementia alone. We're talking speaking in tongues, snake-like movements, and even a kid going missing in her house. Turns out, she's possessed by the spirit of a serial killer doctor, and yes, it's as messed up as it sounds.
8. The Possession of Michael King (2014)
Michael King, a filmmaker, decides to make a documentary proving that the supernatural doesn't exist after the death of his wife. Bad move. He undergoes rituals and dares demons to prove him wrong. Well, they take him up on it. Michael becomes increasingly violent and unpredictable, endangering those around him.
9. The Vatican Tapes (2015)
Angela, a regular 27-year-old, starts showing signs of a demonic possession. A local priest takes it up with the Vatican, and they send in two exorcists. Plot twist: Angela is possessed by the Antichrist himself. Stuff gets biblical with locusts, crows, and apocalyptic prophecies.
10. Case 39 (2009)
Emily Jenkins thinks she's rescuing Lilith, a 10-year-old girl, from abusive parents. She even takes Lilith into her own home. Rookie mistake. People start dying in bizarre accidents, and Lilith ain't as innocent as she seems. Emily seeks the help of a demonologist, and they find out Lilith is not human. Cue chaos involving a full-blown demonic child with powers to manipulate reality.
11. Incarnate (2016)
Dr. Seth Ember has the ability to enter the minds of the possessed. He's hired to help an 11-year-old boy, Cameron, but here's the kicker: the demon inside Cameron is the same one that killed Ember's family. This demon is no run-of-the-mill evil spirit; it's a powerful entity known as Maggie, and Ember has personal vendetta written all over this case.
12. Outcast (2010)
Set in the gloomy backdrops of Edinburgh, Outcast gives us a break from the typical American exorcism settings. Mary, a woman skilled in occult practices, goes on the run with her son, Fergal. They're being hunted by Cathal, a man set on performing a ritual to gain immense power. Mary uses her knowledge to set up magical protections around their home, but despite this, Fergal falls in love with a neighbor, and things start going haywire.

The hospital nuns are sketchy, the priests are skeptical, and Isabella soon learns that multiple demonic entities are involved.
14. The Crucifixion (2017)
Inspired by real events, this movie takes exorcism out of America and into rural Romania. Who's doing the possessing and who's doing the dying? Well, that's for you to find out, but let's just say it doesn't end well for all involved.
