It might make the character rethink her lifestyle.

Summary

  • Young Sheldon's Connie and TBBT's Meemaw seem to be two different characters.
  • Meemaw is one of the most popular characters on the spin-off.
  • Her recent arrest may have a profound effect on her character arc.

Since its release in 2017, Young Sheldon has become a fan-favorite comedy beloved by millions of viewers around the world. However, as a prequel to CBS' flagship sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, YS raises many questions among fans of the original series.

The spin-off simply seems to stray too far from the canon. And considering that the two shows ran concurrently for two years, it's been too noticeable since the beginning.

Aside from the many events that were changed on Young Sheldon, the audience can't wrap their heads around the stark difference between the spin-off characters and the way they were portrayed on TBBT. For example, Mary seems to be a much nicer person with a milder demeanor in the prequel than she is on the original show. Meemaw, on the other hand, is much crankier and more feisty on YS than she is on The Big Bang Theory.

However, there's a very logical explanation for this change in Mary. As we all know, her husband and the father of her children, George, will die suddenly in Season 7 of Young Sheldon, which is sure to leave an indelible mark on her. But what could cause such a change in Meemaw? Perhaps it's her arrest in the seventh episode of Season 7.

She Means Trouble

Mary's mother is probably one of the most beloved characters on Young Sheldon. She's funny, blunt and determined. She doesn't care what people think of her. And she is fierce when it comes to protecting her family, which makes her popular with viewers.

At the same time, Meemaw can be difficult to be around. She's stubborn and uncompromising, and she always thinks she knows best (I wonder, who does Sheldon take after?). This casual disregard for everything and everyone led Connie to set up an illegal gambling room in the back of her laundromat and to bribe the local police to turn a blind eye to her unlawful activities.

A Lesson in Humility

Nevertheless, Meemaw's scheme proves fragile when her venue is busted and she is arrested in Episode 7 of the seventh season. Since it happens on a weekend and the judge is out of town, she has to spend several days in jail. This is theoretical, but the whole situation could cause Connie to change her ways. She might decide that she's too old for such reckless behavior and settle down. As a result, she would become the wise and funny Meemaw we saw on TBBT.

Maybe the arrest won't affect Connie at all – it will just make her crankier than usual and the whole situation will soon be forgotten. But it seems that the event was included in Young Sheldon for a reason. Anyway, we'll find out when Episode 8 premieres on April 18.
