Young Sheldon Hot Take: Missy Was Right to Hate Her Family in Season 6
The poor girl didn't feel an ounce of love from her family.
Summary
- Missy has become one of the most likable characters in Season 7 of YS.
- She was insufferable for most of Season 6.
- Missy had every right to be angry at her parents for neglecting her.
Although Season 7 of Young Sheldon is considerably shorter than the rest of the sitcom due to the 2023 strikes, it has proven to be very eventful, as it has seen the beloved characters in a plethora of consequential situations. Mary and Shelly spent a summer in Germany, where Sheldon got lost after taking a train against his mother's wishes. Meemaw's gambling room was shut down and she was arrested. Mandy and Georgie tied the knot. And Missy really shone when she took over the Cooper household while Mary was away.
In fact, Missy has really matured in Season 7, becoming one of Young Sheldon's most likable characters. She is caring, dependable, and smart. She doesn't make a fuss about anything. And she is more stable now.
In Season 6, however, Missy was an obnoxious teenager who was upset with everyone and everything around her and believed that the whole world was out to get her. So much so that she even tried to run away from her family, whom she had come to hate. And while it was a foolhardy thing to do, Missy had some right to be angry at her parents.
The Spare
Season 6 saw many changes in the Cooper household as Mandy joined the family (although she and Georgie were technically living with Meemaw) and Mary and George's marriage was bursting at the seams. Missy, in turn, was entering her most troubled teenage years, constantly irritated and unruly. Still, she had every right to be angry at her family for making her feel left out.
In Episode 14, Mandy went into labor and everyone in the Cooper household became so preoccupied with her and the baby that they forgot to pick Missy up from school and she had to walk home for miles in the dark. Feeling left out and her problems belittled by the entire family, who were still catering to Sheldon's every need, Missy ran away from home at the end of Episode 15. The following episode followed her and Paige on their short journey, suggesting that she had overreacted.
However, when you think about it, Missy was right to be angry with her family. In fact, she had felt forgotten, ignored, and left out her entire life. During the intelligence test in Episode 5, Season 2, the girl told the examiner that she felt like she was on her own – Georgie had George and Sheldon had Mary and Meemaw, while she had no one to care about her. By Season 6, Missy was just full of emotion and couldn't take it anymore.
Hopefully, Missy's arc will be lighter in the rest of Season 7. Episode 9 premieres tonight, April 25.
