Young Sheldon Fans Are Smitten by Mary Cooper For a Surprising Reason
The character's simple appearance is nothing short of charming.
Summary
- Despite being considered annoying on TBBT, Mary Cooper is one of the absolute fan favorites on Young Sheldon.
- Viewers appreciate the character's impeccable and elegant appearance.
- Mary's style of dress is unusually consistent throughout the show.
Among the many secondary characters on The Big Bang Theory, Mary Cooper is hardly the most likable. In fact, Sheldon's mother is one of the most annoying people on the show, which is perhaps why the audience likes the episode "The Maternal Combustion," in which Dr. Beverly Hofstadter ridicules Mary. Things are strikingly different, however, when it comes to Shelly's mother on Young Sheldon.
Portrayed by the wonderful Zoe Perry, Mary Cooper is one of the most beloved characters on YS. Still, it's fair to say that every other character besides Sheldon is more popular with the spin-off's audience. In Mary's case, viewers admire her loving, tender, and honest demeanor, even if her blind optimism can be annoying from time to time. But there's one thing about Mary that earns her the respect of her fans. Surprisingly, it's her clothing style.
Modest but Elegant
As a deeply religious person, Mary leads a very modest lifestyle. (Though it's hard to tell if it's because of her faith or the lack of money in the Cooper household). At the same time, Shelly's mother always manages to look her best. There is never a hair out of place. And her clothing, however modest, adds grace (pun intended) to her appearance.
'She is always in a dress or skirt and put together. I love her modest dresses, and I am not a person that religion tells me I have to dress modestly. [But] I would definitely wear some of her dresses today,' one Redditor observed. 'It's such timeless elegance.'
Part of the Character
Moreover, Mary's clothing not only enhances her elegance, it also helps create a more consistent and compelling character. We see Shelly's mother wearing the same clothes over and over again, and it makes the character much more wholesome and lifelike.
'While Mary's style isn't exactly what I would wear myself, I really love how the costume department has a set number of dresses/sweaters for her. It's a small detail but usually TV shows have characters across the class spectrum wearing a different outfit every single episode with no repeats ever. It makes her character feel more realistic to notice that she's wearing the same thing as she did a couple episodes ago!' another Reddit user wrote.
Now that Season 7 is about to premiere, we look forward to seeing more of Mary and her elegant clothes. Episode 1 of the seventh season will be released on February 15.
