Young Royals' Unpopular Characters Who Frankly Deserve Better
These characters deserve so much more love.
Upon its release, Young Royals might have appeared as yet another teen drama set in an elite educational institution, exclusive to the privileged offspring of the wealthy and the aristocracy. In essence, it did turn out that way, but the series managed to also offer much more than that, unafraid to depict spoiled and arrogant students, introducing a cast of characters, none of whom are unequivocally good or bad characters. They are all real people with their positive and negative traits.
And while the writers do include other characters in the story from time to time, it is the love story between Wilhelm and Simon that remains the heart of the narrative, and as a result, the fandom's attention is primarily centered on these two, especially since they seem to have the fewest number of character flaws. But as we've mentioned, everyone in Young Royals is a complex and realistic character, and thus, they all deserve empathy and understanding.
Kristina
Queen Kristina of Sweden can indeed be incredibly reserved at times, never openly displaying her emotions or affection. While it's true that her sons, Erik and Wille, never got enough attention and love from her, this doesn't imply that she lacks maternal feelings for her children. Being queen is a duty that extends far beyond formal responsibilities; it's a way of life that demands her to be strict, responsible, and conservative. But despite that, she understands what Wille is going through and tries to support him.
August
August manipulates Simon's feelings for Wille and attempts to sabotage the latter's royal destiny. However, he has one of the most tragic backgrounds: even if his traumas don't justify his actions, they at least make us feel a bit more compassion for him. His father committed suicide; his royal family has hit hard times. August has nobody to share his burden with, so he seeks comfort in drugs, just like his father once did. Regardless of how reprehensible his actions may be, he's just a frightened kid who's lost his way.
Sara
Sara can be overly frank at times and, like all teenagers, makes mistakes, including in her relationship with August. Her feelings for August clearly blinded her, impairing her decision-making abilities. Despite this, she is great at reading situations and drawing logical conclusions. Plus, her heart is in the right place as she's always trying to help others.
